Am I missing something?

Hi everyone, great forum here.

 

I have an 03 Silverado that I bought new last August. I have noticed recently that there is no liner or undercoating protection in the wheelwells above the rear wheels. I can see that it won't take long before rock chips will cause an ugly rust problem there, and it's a white truck.

 

Are they all this way or am I missing a part?

I had the same problem with white. I had a detail shop high pressure clean, rough and undercoat the area and it looks worlds better. It was around $40 but I would bet you could DIY for even less, just making sure to get all the areas ready to take the undercoating evenly.

Bear, is right that you could probably do it yourself.

 

I've often thought about buying a few cans of the aerosol "Rubberized Undercoating" and spraying the wheel wells on my truck.

 

Your truck isn't missing an inner liner, GM never put one in there to begin with.

Most of the trucks, Ford and Dodge, along with GM are too cheap to put a liner in there. You might try Shopman1's wheel well liner kit.

I had the same dilemma and bought Shopman1's kit. I used the pieces for the front and rear of the wheel well, but didn't use the piece that went where the bed meets the frame. Instead, I bought two cans of the 3M spray on rubberized coating from Napa, pressured washed the area, cleaned it off with alcohol, masked the area, and then sprayed like heck...two coats. Looks good and is protected. I highly recommend this approach as it survived an Alaskan winter so it seems to have worked.

4 yrs no chips and no rust. I would also think it would take some rock chips however I think they might put some extra paint in that area.

 

Also if you put a liner in you wont be able to clean all the crap out that gets behind it . That will do more harm in the long run in my opinion

I didn't like tha either so bought 2 cans of the spray on bed liner. you can get it at many autoparts stores. I cleaned wheel wells and sprayed it on. It cleans up better than undercoating and doesn't dull as much.

I use my pressure washer that has a flexible tip on it so that I can point it up behind the rear and in front of the front liner, and it's clean as a whistle. I do alot of driving on gravel and was worried about the chips, nicks, etc. The kit and the spray worked great for me....

I have sprayed undercoating in the wheel wells of every truck I have had. I just didn't like being able to see color above the wheel when looking at the truck from a distance.
