transmission leak on 03 Z71 Tahoe

So I was in my buddies Z71 Tahoe on Monday on the freeway and a guy pulls up and points down....we think we have a flat or something. We pull over transmisison fluid is pouring out of the truck. Needless to say we pulled over and had it towed back to the Stealship who had done TSB work on the harsh shift a week earlier. Apparently a defective part broke loose and reaked havic in the transmssion....this sounds suspect to me. Any ideas what could cause this type of catastrophic failure. He will get the details of what was done to fix it today but I assume a rebuild from the amount of fluid that leaked. What other potential problems could this have caused? Damage to the transmssion cooler? Are there any questions you think he should ask? What a mess!
