anyone running dual batteries?

searched for battery tray, dual batteries, and second battery and came up empty.

i am in need or running an additional battery as the bags will be going in in a few weeks with dual compressors - anyone got any tips or places that sell a good second tray to mount on the driver side?

also, back in the day, i ran 3 batteries in my mini truck with NO isolator - is this recommended or is it a really bad idea

You should be able to get a OE tray from GM,I did this on my '91 and ran it w/out an isolater, HOWEVER, I did use a continuous duty solonoid to seperate the batteries when the ignition was OFF...The AUX BATT Tray mounts on the drivers side,but you may have to move the vapor canister....Sorry I dont have the GM part no. but the parts guys at your local dealer should be able to help ya...and if they give you that look...remind them that the diesels ran 2 batteries

Not all diesels had dual batteries. Some did though. You should be able to get the tray from GM. Does your truck have a plastic tray on the driver's side or a storage box?

The GM number on the tray is #15980007 which lists for $59.61,theres also a reinforcement needed,part #15686247 which lists for $40.95

My buddy has dual batteries in his OBS '00 2500 with the 7.4L engine. I don't know if it's a factory option or if it was done aftermarket. It's a super clean installation, so I want to say it's factory, but I don't know for sure...

Those numbers are for the OBS,The NBS tray number is 15705102 which list's for $24.82.

The website that "citydriver" found is perfect for installing a second battery in the NBS trucks,Thanks "citydriver"!!!

Probably was factory. We had a 98 Z-71 that had dual batteries from the factory. It even had a block heater. That was on a 5.7L.

It came from northern MO. Usually don't see that kinda stuff around here.

what's OBS and NBS

so in order to install a tray, i need a reinforcement?

and are they bolt in, or is some welding needed?

OBS = Old Body Style NBS = New Body Style

If you buy the tray and support from the dealer they should be BOLT IN, just need the bolts and J-nuts which you should be able to find at your local hardware store if the dealer doesnt have them in stock

thanks citydriver - i'll check the dealer and see if i can't get some part numbers and cross them to gmpartsdirect.com - as their prices are usually WAY better on the smaller items (freight for my tranny was horrendous - i can't even imagine what freight to send the core back would have been)

just out of curiousity, where exactly does the battery tray mount? i was looking at the truck and assumed it would mount on the opposite side as the factory location, but there is that charcoal canister right in the way - will that have to be relocated, or perhaps even switched out for a smaller one?

I have four up front in my Avalanche...

I just mounted the bottom one and didn't hook up the wiring, fuses & breakers yet...

Well, I tried the sizing commands but it didn't work... sorry about the "BIG"...

A 95 is a little different from a 96-98. On the 96-98 the battery tray mounts abobe the wiper fluid tank. Most trucks have it there already (it is a plastic tray) Some trucks have a storage box there though. IF you have the box you need to remove it and replace it with a tray.

On the 95 you would need the brackets and tray from a 96.

The evap canister then bolts to the side of the new bracket. Check out a 96 to see how it all mounts.
