What is it?

What the button-like ojbect or sensor thingy located a short distance out from the windshield centered on the dashboard? If it is covered up while driving, will this be a problem?

automatic headlight sensor. if covered at all times your headlights, dash lights and tail lights will be on at all times. not nessacarilly a problem but bulb life may suffer
