512silverado Posted September 20, 2001 Posted September 20, 2001 :notice: Can anyone help me out please. I am new to the board, and was wondering if anyone has put larger tires on their stock alloy rims, and what is the max size you can fit on the rim. I have a 99 Silverado 2wd with the stock alloy rims, and 255/70/16 tires on them. I want to go to a 285/75/16 (33") with a 3 in suspension lift (prawbly Fabtech), but am unsure if the tire will fit, and how it would look on the rim. Thanks in advance for any input.
RyanbabZ71 Posted September 21, 2001 Author Posted September 21, 2001 i have 285's on my stock rims (aluminum on a Z71) Check out http://www.picturetrail.com/ryanbab for pics and the link in my sig also has better pics
512silverado Posted September 21, 2001 Posted September 21, 2001 thanks alot man. they look great, and is precisely what i was looking for. I've heard great things about BFG all terrains...would you recommend any other brand in that size? BFG's seem a little pricey, but most people swear by them.
uknow Posted September 21, 2001 Posted September 21, 2001 Fabtech told me that you can not run stock rims with there kits, the back spacing is to deep, check it out before you buy new rubber.
Stepside Z Posted September 21, 2001 Posted September 21, 2001 First off welcome to the site. Check out my link. I have some detailed pics of 285s on stock rims. That includes a full turn pic.
Shaners Posted September 21, 2001 Posted September 21, 2001 First of all, welcome to the site 512. As far as the BFG's go there are other choices. I don't know about in Texas, but in PA there are tires that go by the name of "Sport Kings". As far as I know they are a BFG A/T under another label. The tread looks the same, and the durabillity is there... I know guys that got over 50K out of them... They are a good looking tire with raised wight letters, and around here nobody is ashamed to run "sport kings".

You don't have to pay all that money for BFG's, because they aren't better at anything them most other tires on the market. Well take that back, they are better at a few things, mainly higher price. Don't be afraid to go look at Cooper, Dunlop, Michelin, Goodyear and others. And remember that there are many tires out there that are like what Shaners mentioned, made by good mfg., just with a different name. Don't be ashamed to run other tires then BFG, as a matter of fact I'm proud of it! As for my recommendation, I would check out the Cooper Discoverer ST. Cooper tires will wear like iron, I plan on atleast 50k out of my mud-terrains.
Jpshostr Posted September 21, 2001 Posted September 21, 2001 Just how much do these Cooper tires that you so highly regard cost? If they wear like you say they do I'd like to put them on our truck, as well as mine once I find one. With our driving style we are wear out tires in no time it seems, we found a nice cheap mud tire, but it doesn't last much longer than the stock ones do. If they are close to the price of BFGs I'll keep looking, but if they are reasonable I'll try to find a dealer for them.

In some areas they are considerable cheaper then what BFG's run, and at some they run about the same. For example, I am running LT245/75R16E on my truck. At a place here in town, that tire was going to be around $140 mounted/balanced, no road hazard. Went to a place where a friend had worked, they were $110 a tire mounted/balanced, with road hazard. Now I swear by them on my truck, but I'm not going to pretend they are perfect. They will be slightly louder then BFG's because of the harder rubber compound, still not bad though. The place I bought them from can no longer offer road hazard, and they are still the tire of choice for farmers that buy mud tires from my friend. btw, the tires I have aren't like the ones above....
Jpshostr Posted September 21, 2001 Posted September 21, 2001 Do you have their website addy handy? I'd like to look over their selection and find their dealers.
Shaners Posted September 21, 2001 Posted September 21, 2001 Kansas, I had a set of tires on my last truck... They were essentialy Coopers but went by the brand name of "Courser" (made by Cooper). I had 4 LT 265/75/16's mounted and balanced with PA sales tax and out the door at just over $400. It is the identical tire to the Cooper Discover/AT but about $20 less per tire.

Cooper Tires Hey Shaners, what did you think of those tires? I've not heard a whole lot about that style. Where they decent in the slick stuff?
illmac77 Posted September 21, 2001 Posted September 21, 2001 a friend of mine at work bought some coopers for his 98 Z71 and they look really good on his truck.ive heard some good things about them as well as the courser's my roomate has them on his jeep.. good price and has a road hazzard on them as well. id look around you can find some good tires that arnt so called name brand... i personally bought goodyear wrangler AT/S's i like the millage i can get out of them which is about 60k and the dual aqua tread pattern they have as well as being pretty good in mud and snow and rain . but its your call, look around
Jpshostr Posted September 21, 2001 Posted September 21, 2001 Well I'll be danged, Farm and Fleet has em. I just may have to price these things next time I'm there, which is too often. Now we've been using either Goodyear Workhorse Extra Grips or some other off-brand that I can't remember the name of. The Goodyears are great, but man they don't wear very well at all. Only got about 20K miles, or a year, out of a pair on the front when we had to drive 100 miles a day on gravel due to bridge closure. The off brand we had on the '96 when we traded seemed like they were wearing better, but we'd only had them on for a month or so. We won't be replacing the stock tires until they wear out, no sense spending the money when you still have plenty of miles left.
