Ping Report

Hi,

Last week I reported that I was going to try to solve the 6.0 ping (detonation) problem by going to a colder range of spark plugs.  The standard plug for the 2001 6.0 engine is a AC Delco/ NGK TR5 Platinum plug.  I chose a NKG TR6 copper plug.  It is one step colder than the TR5 and the cooling rate of copper is quicker than platinum.

I'm pleased to report that there has been a significant reduction of ping since the plug change!  There is little or no ping in the low rpms or lugging the engine just below the shift points.  There still is some ping when the pedal is to the metal above 5K rpm.  I don't use that rpm range too often so I'd have to say that I'm happy.

As for the actual plug change, getting the spark plug wire boot off is the most difficult part.  The entire job, including blasting up and down the expressway, was less than an hour.
