new wheels and tires ROUND 2

After having my brand new wheels rebalanced I still had front end shakes. Turns out my wheels were big bor and i needed HUB-CEMETRIC which some of you guys mentioned on here. These guys are saying no way we can take them back. He ordered a wheel spacer which is a thing piece of plastic to close the gap. Well the spacer worked but it still shakes a tiny tiny bit. I'm fed up. I have a brand new truck and I want it to be right. So they say my truck NEEDS steering stabalizer to dampin the wobble.

my wheels are helo maxx black 16x8

stock was 16x7

tires are bfg all terrain 265/75/16

same as stock, but more aggressive tread.

they claim that if the spacer doesn't kill the problem, that the steering stablizer will. They said that my wider wheel with a bigger stance is going to make my wheel shake. Are you serious? Have I missed something? I have had bigger wheels and never had this problem? Do I need a steering stablizer? Do ya'lls bigger bfg's on stock or aftermarket wheels do this?

fill me in on ya'lls opinion. My last resort is to put this tires on stock wheels.

I have 315/70R17 BFG All-Terrains on my stock 17" Tahoe Z71 rims with NO SHAKE at all. I have 285/75R16 Nitto Terra Grapplers on my stock 16" Silverado rims with NO SHAKE at all.

They are filling you with a bunch-o-crap!

285's on 16x8's here with NO problems. Shove those WRONG wheels down their throat! If they caugh them back up, call an attorney and have them send a letter. This is THEIR mistake and they are trying to put a band-aid on an amputation while getting YOU to spend more money with them.

Get it right, one way or another!

How were they balanced? Some of the best balancing is by a Hunter Load Force machine. There are other lesser Hunter machines that do not do the load force. Discount Tire has a load force balancer but WON'T USE IT UNLESS YOU ASK FOR IT, AND IT COSTS EXTRA.

Buick/Cadillac service centers also have Hunter Load Force balancers - they balanced my 01 Tahoe no problem, but it can take a long time (ie, 1-2hrs). They found one of my Yokohama AVS/ST 285/16's to have a problem that showed up under load whereas the other 3 were within acceptable specs. They also detailed on my invoice the exact results for each tire whereas Discount Tire did not.

Sam Taylor Cadillac load-force balanced our STS for about $100 and found one defective Michelin in the process. Big 10 Tires swapped it out without much fuss and the vibes in the Caddy are gone. The Hunter Load-Force machine is a good way to find some phantom vibration problems.

You bought the wheels from these guys, they sold you the wrong ones and now won't take them back?

On the one hand I can see that they sold you the wheels in confidance that they would work with your truck. (Which some people never have problems with them, I ran a set of big bore on my 95 and they worked great).

On the other han it has been weeks since you bought the wheels and tires. Was it your responsibility to research and buy the right product for your vehicle?

Seems like someone at the tire shop would have known about the hub-centric issue, and brought it to attention before now.

I too have a set of Wheels/Tires that do not seem to be balancing correctly. I get a ton of shake when I hit 70 MPH. Mine are 20" American Racing (Not Hub Centric).

I do not believe Hub Centric is the issue.

Did you take the little clips off of the studs?

I've pretty much had aftermarket wheels on all of my cars since I was 16. Everytime I've encounter any issue like this it's been due to the Hubcentric rings. Either they weren't installed (at all or properly) or they were the wrong size.

Also something to look into is the lug nuts.

1 - Are the torqued properly? Were they tightened in a star pattern? The rim may not be seated properly, especially when you're dealing with a hub ring. I usually put the hub ring on the hub first then put on the wheel. Sometimes it helps if the rim has a removable center cap to remove it so you can see what your are doing. (something to think about).

2 - Are the lugs the proper style for the wheel? The lugs you are using may not seat on the the rim properly. I'd look into that as well.

I just got a set of wheels on my 06 1500 a couple a weeks ago. Discount tire direct sent me a special set of locking lugs to work with the wheels. The stock ones would not have worked. Also like a said the wheels I got a 18 x 9 with 285/60R18 Nitto Terra Grapplers. They went on without any issues. I've even just finished towing a boat this weekend on the highway and all not shake what so ever.

If you're getting the shaft from the guys you bought them from, go to someone you trust knows what they're talking about. Even if you have to pay a little more it'll be worth it in the long run for all the agrivation Just my two cents.

Good luck Man!

I would demand a replacement wheel that is correct for the truck, it matters zero if they have used these rims on other trucks like yours in the past , the fact is you have a wobble ..

Did the installing shop sell the rims ? You did not say that I noticed.

As far as a stabilizer if any one would need one look at my truck , i would be someone who you would think does,,but nope even up to 90 I run smooth as silk and I went up 4 tire sizes !

Take Manager for a ride , tell him you will not accept the vibration and that a solution needs to be found that does not include ading a shock to the suspension to compensate foe an un-even rotation wheel which will cause other issues down the road

This seems simple to me. If the shop sold you the tires and wheels for your truck, then it is their problem. If they sold you the wrong thing, it is their fault, not yours.

You may need a stablizer, but you should not need it because you put larger rooling stock on your truck. I would sit down with the guys and explain to them that you spend good money with them and they need to stand behind their selection of product for your vehicle. If they do not you will begin by taking a full page ad in the local newspaper explaining what is wrong with your truck and who did the sales job (not slander, only truth). If they do not repond to that, then you will have your attorney contact them and let him handle it from there.

To begin this process, I would go to another shop and have them do an inspection of your rig and tell you what is wrong with the set-up and how it would be fixed. Put that in writing and leave it in your back pocket until you need it. Do not start a war between the two shops, and do not tell the second shop why you need the qoute, they may inflate it a little and you want to be as honest as possible.

Little Clips????

On my 04 there were little clips on the stud behind the wheels. GM put them there for some purpose, but you have to remove them for aftermarket wheels. I watched Discount Tire install my new wheels and they did remove the clips. Pretty easy to see if they are there or not once you remove the wheel.

It is the tires. My dad had BFG AT's and had to keep taking his truck back because the wheel would shake at high speeds. Finnaly someone told him that they have a lot of complaints about the BFG AT's ride quality. He changed them out for some Goodyear Wranglers and has no problems.
