Cab Creaking, Help!!

Recommended Posts

Hopefully someone will be able to help me. I have a 04 Silverado, 2wd, SBEC that has a creak in the cab while turing into the driveway. I guess it is the body flexing as I drive over the curb.

I have had it into the dealer many times, they continue to "lube" the weatherstrips and it doesn't solve the issue. They are to the point right now they don't know what to do either. Any ideas?

Also, I have a creak/squeak in the front end also, you can hear it while pushing down on the bumper. According to the write-up, they lubricated the upper/lower control arms. It's still doing it-creaking/squeaking.

What would you guys do? I have been in touch with GM cust. service about this ordeal, they keep referring back to the dealer.

Thanks in advance for your help!

i don't know if this is related, but my 03 yukon was making the creaking noise you're talking about. it used to do it everytime i turn into my driveway or any other driveways. i figured that it's the bushings or something like that. i don't even know when it started but noticed it one night. anyway, i took mine to the dealer and they told me my hood was out of alignment. so they re-align the hood and now it doesn't do it anymore. maybe it's worth the time to get your hood alignment checked out. hope this helps.

I had a similar problem with my 2004 RCSB. The problem turned out to be the right rear body bushing. This bushing consists of (from the bottom up) the bolt, lower rubber bushing, the truck frame, the upper rubber bushing, a metal cup to contain the upper rubber bushing, the cab of the truck. The creak comes from the metal to metal rubbing of the metal cup and the cab. The solution to this problem was to lubricate that area with a product called VISCOTENE, made by WYNNS. Its a waterproof lubricant that sprays out thin to penetrate tight areas... a sticky waterproof film is left over once the solvant evaporates. GM uses this product on its assembly line to cure creak and rattle isses. I bought this product from http://www.jemdistributors.com/ Go to shop products.

The other option is to dismantle to body bushing an lubricate it with "formula number 5" which is a polyurethene bushing grease that energy suspension uses. Its similar to the viscotene with the exception that the viscotene comes in a spray can insted of a jar.

Viscotene may help the a-arm creak too.

Hope this helps

good luck, I've got a 2003 extended cab and the door joints squeek and chatter over every bump and pot hole.

I'm going back to the dealer again, next week.

Had a 99 Ford with extended cab, never had this problem.

Gary and Steve,

Please read below - I have copied and pasted it in from a post I made several months ago. I had mine at the dealer several times, and they continued to lube the weather strippings and it never worked - the problem was they were only putting the grease on the top side of the strippings, not taking them off and applying to the back side. Read my instructions below. It will fix your problem and it will feel like you are driving a brand new truck again.

Hello,

I feel your pain and know exactly what the problem is. The noise is coming from you weather stipping. Here are two of my posts from back in August. They describe the problem and how to fix it:

It is absolutely the weather strippings in the door seals. What you need to do is go to Wal-Mart and buy a can of STP silicone grease (blue can, red top, kind of like a spray paint can.) Pull your weather stripping off (driver and passanger side)...I am talking about the strip that runs along from the front fenders, up the windshield, and then across the edge of the roof, then down behind the rear doors. Wipe them off with a dry rag (to get the dirt off) and then SOAK both sides of them with that stuff. It is "greaseless" and odorless, so don't worry. When I say both sides, I mean the side you can physically see, and the side that actually touches the truck. (this is important) I had mine in the shop 3 times for that problem...and the truck sounded like a piece of s**t from day 1. I wanted to get rid of it because it sounded like it was 30 years old from all the noise the cab made. All the dealership did was spray the side you can see. After a year of living with the noise, I started thinking that maybe it was the backside of them. I soaked them, put them back on (real easy to do) and haven't had a problem since. That was like 3 months ago, but I'll do it every 2 weeks if necessary. It feels like I am driving a brand new truck, even though it is only 1 1/2 years old. Good luck, and I feel your pain!!!

And here is the 2nd post, in response to some questions:

It took all of about 10 minutes to do this. They pull off real easy...and putting them back on isn't too hard either. When putting them back on, start just above the windshield, and then slide it down behind the fender (be sure to note their position before taking them off and you'll see what I am talking about). Snap it back on along the windsheild, along the roof, then down behind the door. I am not mechanically savvy at all, and I am not a big fan of ripping things off, but it was very easy. I did it like 2 months ago, and I have had no problems with wind noise, leaks, or the strippings not staying on. I bought the GM dielectric grease, but I did not use it. The little tube was $14 from the dealership, and the can of silicone grease was really cheap at Wal-Mart. The way I figured out it was the strips making the noise was that I pulled them off and drove it around the block. It made my day...it was so quiet!!!!! Anyone that thinks their truck is a POS because of all the noise the cab makes needs to try this.

Here is the link to the thread: (notice the person that started it has the exact same description of the problem that you do.)

First off, I appreciate any and all comments. I will try almost anything to get rid of the noise. I was at the dealership today and the guy behind the counter just looked at me like I was speaking Japanese. I guess the problem is, I keep waiting for them to just speak up and say they don't know how to fix it.

The lube behind the seal does sound like a winner, I will definitely try it this weekend.

I still have a squeak coming from the front, I have the rear seat of the extended cab makes a noise when you lean against the back portion of it, and the continued cab squeaks. I love my truck other than all of the problems (although not many).

When I get a chance, I'll try some of the suggestions and report of the success.

Here is my .03

It has worked for me like a champ. I too went with the wally world spray on lub. I forget the actual name but it is real cheap.

All I did was spray the latch where the rear door grabs the posts AND (here is the key) The little black brace on the rear door! You have to get that one or you will continue to squeek! I didnt believe it until I tried it. Squeek is gone and returns around evert 4 months or so. I hit it again, and presto....

Look on the rear door, it is a black brace of some kind made of composite plastic. I hope this helps. It works like a champ on my truck.... :lurk:
