Truck/Tractor Pull Sunday

They always have a stock class for trucks off the street.  Any tips on how/what to do?  4HI or 4LO?  Add weight to bed?  Etc.  Let me know. :D

At our county fair they always have weight classes. Even for the street trucks. So try to get as close to legal weight as possible. It will include adding weights. I use 4 lo and 2nd gear. Get the sled rolling and lay into it. You dont want your tires spinning off the line. Other than that.....have fun! :fume:

Do you let the trans start in first, then let it shift to second or do you start in 2nd. With an Alli when you select "2" it starts in first and then will shift into second. I think 4lo 2nd is still very low w/ 5speed allison. Maybe 1st in 4hi? What do you think BadHD ( what is the overall gear ratio in your truck in 2nd/4lo) ?

I once participated in tractor pulling with 'stock' trucks. It was a 2 day deal and on the first night everyone including myself had added weight to the bed and some very aggressive tires. This didnt seem to work to well. The second day everyone came back with close to highway tread type tires, no weight in the bed (some even 'fixed' the suspesion i.e. connected a solid plate from the frame to axle, to prevent squat) and we seen some 'full pulls' from these stock trucks.

I used 4low in drive and it seemed to work the best.

just my experience, hth

So, how'd you do?

I ran mine last summer at a truck pull. I used 2nd gear 4LO. I had plenty of power and not enough speed or traction. I rev'd up to the limiter right away and it spun out at the end with out the engine pulling down. I finished about middle of the pack in around 15 trucks. If I went again I'd try 1st gear 4HI, but my 1st gear is lower than yours. I think a mud tire would have helped with traction vs. my AT tires too.

I'm sure you learned a little running the first time and talking to other pullers. I'm a novice at this too, but BadHD is right you want to add weight as far front as you can (i.e. passenger side cab floor) to get close to the weight limit. Some guys make wieght brackets that attach were your tow hooks mount. I was also told to turn down the torsion bars to try and get as much weight to the front as possible as you will have plenty of weight on the rear. This is all probably after the fact, but maybe you've caught the bug to try it again.

Hey 496cubes, how do you like the 8.1 and the 6 speed? I am thinking about getting a new truck and am looking at the 8.1 and 6 speed and the duramax and 6 speed. Can you get the tire spinning pretty good? I am sick of this auto bs and want to row my own gears.

I like this set-up, my only gripe is the overdrive really isn't an overdrive, turning close to 2500 RPM at 65-70 mph. With 6 gears I would have thought to have a little taller gear in 6th. It would also be nice if reverse were lower as I need to ride the clutch when backing up the trailer. I have no problem spinning the tires as long as I want with the 245's on. The 285's aren't as easy. As far as a manual transmission I'm partial as I wouldn't have it any other way. I have to admit I get a little jealous sometimes not having chosen the diesel as they can get tons of HP and TQ by just adding a chip. And with them getting 20 mpg compared to my 12 it is a hit to the wallet. But I don't have to worry about blended fuel in the winter time and wondering if it will start if I didn't plug it in like my brother's 6.5L. I love the motor and haven't had any problems with it. I've straight piped it and it sounds great, would suggest at least putting a non-restrictive muffler on it.
