Drivetrain Clunk?

Recommended Posts

I have a 04 2500HD with the 6.0 and 4L80E its also 4X4 and when i go from drive to reverse or park to reverse it makes this clunk not extremely loud just annoying. Does anyone else have this noise and is it normal. It was worse and I took it in to the dealership and they found that the Low range syncronizer was bad so they replaced it and it helped but it is still not perfectly quite. Oh also when its in 4X4 Low range the noise can be louder sometimes. Thanks in advance

I have the same problem. According to GM (local shop talking) this is normal. That is the clunk! Had a '95 GMC do the same thing only not as loud as my '03.

I have this problem too. It is almost nonexistant when the truck is cold. Once it warms up the clunk is pretty bad. I just live with it. I won't fix it until it breaks.

I am bringing my 03 to the dealer on Monday. I have written instructions to the dealer to put the trans in 2nd, accelerate to 15-20mph, take your foot off the gas for a few seconds then back on the gas. I get a loud clank. Do you have this? Are they telling you that this is normal? I will let you know what they tell me.

Well I can’t say that I have that problem. I have not tried those steps. I will tonight, see if it happens. I do have some hesitation in the tranny. If I sit at a stop light and take my foot of the brake to accelerate. Sometimes I just get rpms and no movement. Then a few seconds later it kicks in. This has only happened a handful of time in almost two years, so not worried about it. Besides that I’m working on ordering a ’05 right now. Just playing the game with the dealers.

Dont' waste you time. I have had mine in over a dozen times about this same issue. Perfectly normal just normal slack... More like making the truck way loose...

Just as a note to your instruction. I tried the same thing on my '03 and could not get it to clunk, even getting on it alittle hard.

Thanks for all the input guys.  Much appreciated :D

The only "clunk" I get is when I go from reverse to park.

I am taking it in to the dealer tomorrow, to find out if this normal. If there is no problem, then at least I get it in GM's system, in case this clunk becomes a problem later.
