Wind noise in extended cab

Recommended Posts

Took a long trip this weekend in my truck.  At highway speeds, the wind noise on the right side is really loud.  Almost like the door isn't shut, but it is.

Is there a way to adjust the latches on the rear door so it closes tighter?  My other thought is that it might be the window on the rear door.

Anyone have this problem and found a solution?

you're not the only one.  I have a three door pickup and on my ext cab side I get this whistling noise at higher speeds.  I've found it's caused by two things, one is the ext cab door isn't shut all the way, that's easily remedied.  The other I'm working on.  It only happens in cold weather so I'm thinking that it's because the weather stripping contracts and doesn't make a tight seal.  A month after I got the truck the weather stripping would droop on the side so I used a very good glue and glued it into place.  However, that doesn't stop the whistling.  Im planning on experimenting this week on adding some foam insulation to the door to see if that helps it at all.

Get used to the wind noise problem, we all have it. I had it in my 2000 3 door. Got the rear window replaced, helped a little but I can still here some wind noise. My problem is now noise coming from the Windsheild. I think my bugsheild is deflecting the wind and cauing this one.

This is one of the reasons I got my crew cab. I had a '99 extended cab with the third door. The thing was always loud even after being to the dealer. The lack of a nice solid hinge post between the two doors is probably the main reason. The doors latching to each other is just too flexible. It doesn't take much flex to create wind noise. My crew cab is another story. It is very quiet and solid sounding all the time. ;)

I had my '00 Silverado excab in the shop for the TSB on the rear windows.  The dealer actually had a "glass" guy come in and replace both rear windows, and install new latches.  I also had to have the rear door on the drivers side adjusted when it was in the shop.

The window replacement helped alot but not 100%.  I think some of my wind noise was coming in from between the rear of the cab and the front of my Leer cap...

I've taken my truck to the dealer on it about 4 times, and each time they say they fixed it.  And each time I leave and go on the freeway and it's still there.

What's that TSB on the rear windows???  I never had mine checked out, I just assumed it was the weatherstripping.

There is a TSB on the rear windows for the dealer to replace the windows and latches and maybe even the gaskets too for "wind-noise".  I'll have to check around to see if I can't find the # for you...

I think the bill was $500-$600!!!  I'm glad GM paid it...

Thanks, that would be great if you could get me that link.  Hopefully that will take care of the problem, or at least some of it.  For now I've just been turning up the stereo, but the passengers complain about the wind noise becuase it's right by there ear.

Here's a little trick from a former GMC Master Tech:

It works on any car or truck to find and repair wind leaks...if its a wind noise that's a diffrent subject.

First you need to close up all the doors and windows and turn on the AC so you are in "reg air mode" NOT "recycle air mode" as you want to pressureize the cab...when you suck air from the out side there will be a slight pressure inside the cab....Make sure you have the fan on full speed!  Next you need a mechanics thesesascope with an open hose at the end of the ear pieces or you could use just a 3 foot piece of 5/16" of vac hose....next with the door closed you want to scan the area of your door and even the windshield and outside door handles...if you hear air rushing you have found your air leak...I've fixed dozens of cars and trucks with air leaks no one else could find!

To fix most weatherstrip leaks you can use clear or black silicone sealer...also if the door needs adjusted you will know when you have gotten rid of the leak.

I had a 99 Sierra 3 door extended cab.  When GM announced their latest incentives, I thought about a new Sierra 4 door extended cab.  Then I remembered riding in my Sierra's passenger seat once and not liking the wind right next to my ear.  After that it was easy, a heavy half crewcab or Avalanche - and the Av won.

I have a 99 three door Silverado and have to slam the third door to get it to shut all the way. Otherwise one of the two latches doesn't latch all the way and I get a lot of wind noise. Anyone know how I can adjust for this. The dealer just put more grease on the latch.

Thanks,

Rob
