2003 Envoy "Service Engine Soon" Light

This came on the other day. I checked the fuel cap, and it was loose, so I tightened it up. The light didn't go out. The wife brought it to the dealer and they couldn't find anything wrong, so they just reset the light (which also reset the oil life indicator!! DOH, but no big deal I guess), and they told her "it's just the fuel cap." Well, the light just came on again, 48 hours after the dealer serviced it.

The truck is an '03 with 21,000 miles on it. Any ideas on what to look for? Could the oxygen sensor be bad this early? Clogged air filter (I swear a clogged filter tripped the light in her Nissan Pathfinder, I replaced the filter, and the light went out).

Any ideas?

Thanks

The gas cap is usually the main culprit, but you have already gone down that road. Is it running rough or anything, or just like normal. The o2 sensors can go out this early, not normal, but my Trailblazer is in the shop now due to bad o2 sensors, with only 11k miles on her. I would just give everything a once over, from the intake all the way back to the cat. converter and fuel cap.

When my o2 sensors went out it started to run real bad (rough) at idle and between 60-75mph.

Thanks Chris

You might want to check this TSB out as well:

This TSBis listed for all Envoy's/Trailblazers 2WD/4WD I6/V8

Do you have the detail for that TSB? Interesting that it mentions the air filter. As I mentioned, on my wife's Pathfinder, replacing the air filter solved the problem.

All it gives is the info that I posted. If you go to the dealer with the TSB #04-07-30-013 they should be able to see if it applies to you. I was doing my normal TSB search for my Trailblazer after I replied to you post and saw that listed and remeber your problem with the air filter.

Did some searching and this is what I found:

Corporate Bulletin Number 04-07-30-013 will be available in SI on March 18, 2004.

Automatic Transmission Shift, Engine Driveability Concerns or Service Engine Soon (SES) Light On as a Result of the Installation of an Aftermarket Reusable, Excessively Oiled Air Filter.

So this TSB only applies if you have an aftermarket filter (K&N oil type filter). Are you running the normal filter or an aftermarket one?

Thanks Chris

Now that Bulletin basically concerns MAS equipped vehicles, however GM appears to be sending it out to all divisions. Funny thing is that the 4.2 I6 doesn't use a MAS, the device in the intake is a hot-wire temperature probe to measure intake temperatures. The text of the bulletin is as follows:

SERVICE - ALL BUICK, CADILLAC, CHEVROLET, GMC TRUCK, ISUZU, OLDSMOBILE, PONTIAC AND HUMMER DEALERS

Subject: A/T Shift, Engine Driveability Concerns or SES Light On as a Result of the Installation of an Aftermarket Reusable, Excessively Oiled Air Filter -- 2004 and Prior Cars and Lt Duty Trucks and 2003-2004 HUMMER H2

Corporate Bulletin Number 04-07-30-013 will be available in SI on March 18, 2004.

Automatic Transmission Shift, Engine Driveability Concerns or Service Engine Soon (SES)

Light On as a Result of the Installation of an Aftermarket Reusable, Excessively Oiled Air Filter

Models: 2004 and All Prior Cars and Light Duty Trucks

2003-2004 HUMMER H2

DO THIS

First, Inspect the vehicle for a reusable aftermarket excessively oiled air filter

DON'T DO THIS

DO NOT repair under warranty if concerns result from the use of a reusable aftermarket oiled air filter.

The installation of an aftermarket reusable, oiled air filter may result in:

1. Service Engine Soon (SES) Light On

2. Transmission shift concerns, slipping and damaged clutch(es) or band(s)

3. Engine driveability concerns, poor acceleration from a stop, limited engine RPM range

The oil that is used on these air filter elements may be transferred onto the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor causing contamination of the sensor. As a result, the Grams per Second (GPS) signal from the MAF may be low and any or all of the concerns listed above may occur.

When servicing a vehicle with any of these concerns, be sure to check for the presence of an aftermarket reusable, excessively oiled air filter. The MAF, GPS reading should be compared to a like vehicle with a OEM air box and filter under the same driving conditions to verify the concern.

Transmission or engine driveability concerns that are the result of the installation of an aftermarket reusable, excessively oiled air filter are not considered to be warrantable repair items.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm running a regular OEM air filter. Oh well, back to the dealer.

Your right to take it back to the dealer. You paid for the truck& warrenty so use it. Having it fixed under warrenty is a complaint so to speak. :flag:

Well, you guys would never guess what the problem is...there is a leak in the fuel tank!

Are these metal or plastic tanks? Regardless they had to order the tank, so they gave my wife a 2004 Trailblazer as a loaner. She hopes to get it back tomorrow.

Good to hear you got it sorted out! I think the fuel tank is a polyethulane(sp) type construction: plastic.

Thanks Chris

Thanks. Seems fine now. The light must have gone out on it's own too, as soon as they started it with the new tank, as the oil life meter wasn't reset back to 100%.

Thank goodness for warranties!

    • This is a really late reply but I just found this thread. They won't sell the hinges. I've gone 7 rounds with them. Their solution is to buy a new cover. I'm about to buy a new cover and it won't be a Bakflip. It also won't be from realtruck.com.
    • Yes, and also pulling heavy trailers or a large camper up steep grades as well as descending grades such as the more rustic off road camping locations and using engine braking with that low gearing as well as soft ground can just suck the power . I realize pickups these days tend to have an over all lower first gear ratio compared to automatic transmission pickups from years back so that has helped a lot in its ability in high range but there comes a point if in four wheel drive the torque runs out at the wheels, certainly with a gas engine. They don't put two speed transfer cases on pickups for a cool factor, they have a function if one needs that massive torque to the wheels that high range can't deliver.
    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps.
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
