it just started doing this. when im driving and stop some times it idles at about 2000 rpm and will not go back down and it smells like gas when i get out of my truck. It is a maunaual transmision. I was thinking maybe a idle sensor or something?

Could be your IAC, I'd also check the coolant level. If the coolant temp sensor is getting an incorrect reading due to a low coolant level, it could send the idle up and richen the mixture, which might give you that gas smell. Just a few ideas to throw at ya.

Most likely the IAC solenoid. I just replaced one on a 96 5.7L.

Sometimes you can clean the solenoid up to fix it, but usually it needs replaced.

Be sure to clean all the crud out of the throttle body when you replace the IAC. IF you don't you will be replacing it again soon.

Just for poops and giggles, try cleaning the throttle body first and see if that helps any. If not, it would be nice if you knew someone with a TechII that could perform an active test on the IAC to see if it's the problem.

If you go to the dealer, the diagnostic fee will probably be the same price as the part. Personally, I hate to throw parts at a problem without knowing for sure, but if you can get the part cheap enough, it might be worth a shot.

Just so you know: IAC= Idle Air Control valve
