Anti Lock brakes???

Hey guys,

I have a problem with my truck again!!!

I just replaced the front rotors and pads on my truck and the anti lock brakes keep comin on when I am stopping.

They only seem to come on when I am braking softly and am almost to a complete stop. Then they engage and turn off when I am completely stopped. There has got to be a reason that they are doing this. I noticed this happening before I did the rotors and pads and hoped that doing so would fix the problem.

It does this whether the pavement is dry, wet. ALl of the time. Please Help!!! Thanks

You're losing the speed signal from one of your wheel speed sensors. You could probably figure out which one if you have a scanner and can watch the wheel speeds when this happens, but it'll be a guess otherwise.

Where are these speed sensors located and what would I do to fix them. Do you think they just need cleaned or replaced?

I've never paid any attention to my '99 Yukon but the '92 I had, had what GM called reluctor rings. The sensor would read these rings for wheel roation speed. It looks like a gear mounted at the innerside of the rotor. If one of the cogs on thr reluctor ring gets damaged it screws up the system. I learned the hard way, it's a long story of why I didn't do it myself but I paid a indy to replace my lower ball joints.They drove the ball joint rivet heads off with an air hammer, it slipped and knocked a cog off of the reluctor ring. They evidently didn't test drive it and when I went to leave my ABS would kick in when applying the brakes. You can pul the ABS fuse to disable the system until you make the repairs. This wil not harm anything except you will have no ABS.

I had the same problem with a 98 1500 I had Tech told me that one or both front bearing assy. where bad(had play in it) that caused the ABS to come on at low speeds.

The sensor is located in the hub. Just look for the wire coming out on the inside of the wheel area and follow that to where it ends near the hub.

 

There have been instances where you pull the sensor out and clean the rust buildup where it sits and reinstall it and it fixes the problem. That happens on the newer ones but I don't recall what the arrangement is on a '97. Wouldn't hurt to give it a try.

 

As mentioned, you could have a damaged reluctor, but unless someone has been hammering in that area, a piece broken off is unlikely. I've also seen reluctor's cracked, just from stress, and this will cause the same type of problem. I've never seen it on a truck though, only the "W" body cars.

I would imagine the '97 is the same set-up as my '98. When you remove your rotor, look for a 1"x1.5" (aprox) black box with a wire coming out, whenever I work on my brakes, it is covered with metal shavings, clean off the shavings and see if it helps.

My ’03 is having the same problem,,,anti-locks coming on at a slow roll to a stop…..

 

Any additional input on this?

My '03 with 85k just started doing this. When the ABS kicks in, which way does it pull, left or right? Which ever way it pulls, the problem is on the opposite side. I found a lot of play in my hub assy and when you pulled the sensor out and looked down at the teeth, you could see that they didn't turn with the hub. ~$200 for a replacement hub, three bolts and it's out in your hands.
