2000 (NBS) Tahoe LT 4x4- Power Steering Pump

In the last couple of weeks, I've had a whining noise from the engine compartment that is tied to RPM.

In the last couple of days, I've had some on and off loss of power steering, which leads me to believe that the power steering pump is about to give out. I've checked the fluid level which is fine.

I wanted to pick y'alls brain to see about how much this is going to cost me. Thanks in advance for your responses. :ughdance:

Mine has been going out also, but mainly when it's cold out. I took it in for the same problem before my warranty was up, but they couldn't duplicate it. So now my warranty is expired and it's doing it more and more as winter arrives. Since it is documented that I went there for that problem they should fix if for free. I have a feeling there is going to be an argument on that one. I hope you get yours fixed and it doesn't cost you too much.

hey guys -- mine went out on my 2000 2wd Yukon in August when it had about 72,000 miles on it. It went out when I was moving -- towing a Uhaul trailer, no less. So, it was quite inconvenient to say the least.

Anyway, I did the repair work myself (it was a bit of a PITA) over the course of a couple of days. If you know what you're doing, you can probably do it pretty quickly. The total for parts was roughly $120. I replaced the pump assembly, which was about $80, I think. I also went ahead and replaced the P/S pulley, which was the rest of the cost (well, plus the fluid).

It has worked fine ever since. Let me tell you, you don't want to be stuck somewhere when it goes out, because it's hard to steer without it (although, you can do it). Luckily, I was in the parking lot of my new apt. complex when mine went out, so I just parked it and did the repairs there.

Let me know if you have any other questions -- about how to fix it, part numbers, etc. I used a Haynes manual which guided me through the whole process. Only thing is when I finished I still had an F-bracket left over that I couldn't figure out where it goes. Still need to find out exactly where to put that and get it back in there.

I'm just guessing, but I'd say that it would run you $300-$400 with labor to have someone else do the job?

Hope this helps.

The stealership wanted $525 to install a new pump. I went to my tire guy and had him recommend a mechanic and that guy thought it might be the steering gear box. I kind of doubt this but what do I know. I guess I'll just wait until it completely fails and then I'll do something about it.

I wish I could find a nice, small repair shop in the west Dallas/Irving/Coppell area that isn't a chain where there was a mechanic I could trust. I've got a tire guy I just need a trustworthy mechanic as my Tahoe gets older...

On a side note, this is the only problem I've had with my Tahoe after the rear power window motors went out (covered while under warranty).

I love this Tahoe!

Ended up needing a new gearbox... found a great mechanic in Arlington and got a rebuilt ACDelco gearbox installed for $500... everything is great again with the old girl and she's driving great!
