5.3 vs 6.0

OK I have a 2 part questions

First of all what would be faster a 5.3 4x4 ext. cab vs a 2500 crew cab 4x4 6.0

I know the 6.0 is a stronger motor, but will the weight of the 2500 compensate for the extra power.

The reason I ask is i drove my buddies new 6.0 and man it pulled like a beast of the line. But I feel mine was faster getting to 75mph. We havn't raced each other, and prob wont, but who would win in a 1/4 mile.

Could someone also post some stock dyno graphs of the two motors?

I would really like to see the differnce of torque curve.

OK now the 2nd part. With out going to internal with mostly bolt ons, and with N/A only can you get to the power numbers of a 6.0 from a 5.3

Thanks Mark.

Just a thought, but the 2500 probably had 4:10 gears...That will make it pull harder off of the line, but start to wind out at higher speeds.

If the axle ratios were the same and they both had Automatic transmissions I would say the 1500 would be faster for these reasons.

1. Overall Weight (including the 2500 is a Crew Cab and the 1500 is an Extra Cab)

2. 1500 has a 3.06:1 First gear Ratio whereas the 2500 has a 2.48:1 First Gear

I've noticed that the Vortec 6.0's that are equipped in the Suburban's and Yukon XL's are 325 hp 365 ft lbs, and the HD's have 300 at 360, i think it would've been better if Sub and XL share the same engine with the HD. IMO

well, the 2500's mostly have 3.73's where the z-71 would most likley have 4.10's I think the 1/2 ton would be faster. I drove both before purchasing my truck, and I did not care about speed, I wanted the extra room in the cab...

They are the same engine. The only difference is in the PCM. The HD series are considered work trucks and GM felt more drivetrain protection was needed so increased amounts of Torque Management was added. That is why it is common knowledge the HD trucks respond better than all other GM trucks to an advanced handheld programmer or custom tune. An SPE Proflash and/or Custom Tune (custom can add even more) can bring you to 330 HP and 380 lbft Torque on 87 Octane Fuel in an HD Truck.

Yes it is 4wd, and the ET's were achieved on the same day. Actually, that 17.23 out of my truck might have been a fluke....the next best ET was 17.40, other than that all of my runs were 17.50's or .60's. The older 1500 was alot quicker, but no faster. Must be the difference in HP and torque managment.

My 03 1500 HD (6.0L) weighs in at just under at about 5900 lbs. with a full tank of fuel.

But my 99 Ext. Cab with the 5.3L sure felt quicker even though that motor was only rated at 270hp.

Both trucks were 4x4s.

my 03 1500hd feels like a slug!!! My wifes 4.7 durango kicks it's butt!!! And so does my Buddies Lifted Av with the 5.3. I think the 6.0 in the HD is to offset the weight differance, and with TM, it doesn't make it feel like it does much (IMO). I'm just glad I have the added towing capabilities, the beefier tranny and axles... you give some, you take some.

Exactly what he said. 'cept I didn't know the weight, and my 4x4 ext was a 2000. The Westers tune really has helped narrow the gap on the butt dyno, though.
