Electronic Transfer Case

I was curious about the 4wd set up on my 96 K2500 The electronic (push button) 4wd works fine as far as the idiot lights tell me they blink then stop within a second or 2.

The problem or rather question I have is that when I disengage the 4wd to return to 2wd the light says its OK but the truck still seems to have the front axle engaged. There is no traction from the wheels and it does not bind up/dig in on corners like it would in 4wd but it sounds kinda... grumbly ( for lack of a better word) for a short while then it goes away.

I have tried backing up after disenaging the 4wd and that seems to work?

Any and all thoughts appreciated.

When rolling down the road, when I disengage my 4x4, I let off the gas for a second or two and it seems to allow the front to freewheel much sooner...

I think I tried that first but maybe I didnt wait long enough?

Also would the deep freeze up here in the North east cause this as well?
