Just wondering if you can tell when your truck is throwing a code and how will you know?

will the message center tell you?

If you have a hard engine code the check engine lt will illuminate. Pending codes need to be checked with a scan tool.

So if i have a problem with something there could be a code and the check eng light would not be on.

 

I'm having a Metal to metal or a ringing sound on acceleration only about 30mpg but seems to go away at higher speeds

I doubt that there would be any code associated with that...maybe check all of the exhaust heat shields and make sure that they're not loose. I've also heard of some folks having loose O2 sensor shields.

i had an 03 durango before i bought my 04 z71 burb, and on the durango if you turned the key from off to aux 3 times or so, it displayed any codes in the odometer readout. is there anything like this with chevrolets?

Nope, not on the trucks or most of our cars. Corvette can display DTCs in the DIC with the push of a few buttons.
