PF-44 cancelled??

Recommended Posts

I installed what I looked up at the parts store.

Did the 1st oil change on my 2004 GMC Sierra 5.3

I took off a PF-44 oil filter (the original)

I installed a PF-46 oil filter.

No leaks; good pressure

Is the 46 the newer version of the 44??

The 46 is correct now, the 44 had an orange gasket which suppose to be better at preventing sticking. Mine and 3 others at work all had 44's and we all now use 46's.

Just another case of parts subbing.

I have an 05 and also had a PF-44 from the factory.

Another alternative for a little more money is a UPF-44 (GM Part No. 25329389) which is a Ultraguard Gold premium oil filter by AC Delco.

By the way, I found that using a strap type wrench on the oil filter is a real pain because the filter is right next to the oil pan and there is no room to move the strap wrench handle.

I bought a end cap filter wrench that fits over the end of the filter and has a 3/8 inch square drive hole for a ratchet handle and extension. This makes removing and installing the filter a snap.

I got my wrench from Car Quest, part number STL 54760 (76 mm filters with 14 flutes) for about $6.

I think that the 44 has been discontinued and the 46 is the replacement. I personally use the 53 on the truck, since it is longer and easier to remove.

We do alot of Oil changes at our shop and though we don't use AC we use the longer filter on all the NBS GM trucks(4.8.5.3,6.0) we service.I don't know why they went to the stinkin short filter.

is that a PF 53 ? Its longer you said, does it hold more oil and how much, my 5.3 hold and even 6qts what will it hold with the longer one and will it effect my warrenty ? Will it hurt my engine.

It's the filter that came on the 99 to 02 or so.It will make it hold alittle more oil and won't void anything.

I think you might mean PF-59...that was factory equipment on my truck in 99, and what I'm still using today.

Yep, that's what I bought at the dealer last week. I asked him about the PF-59 vs. PF-44/46 affecting warranty and he (parts mgr) didn't think there would be any problem. It might add a half pint to the capacity. I haven't changed the oil yet, but that's on my list of things to do.

to remove the oil filter, do you turn it clockwise or counter clockwise? Just want to know since I will be changing my own oil soon.
