What's the Difference?

When I checked, it looked like the gear ratios were exactly the same. What's the difference?

The gear ratios are exactly the same. The 4L85e is basically just a beefed up version of the 4L80e, built to handle the additional power of the vortec 8100 in the Suburban and Avalanche ¾ ton chassis.

The ONE and ONLY difference (this has been confirmed with our tranny pro.) is a flanged bushing at the rear planet input and matching Torrington bearing instead of standard bushing and nylon bushing/bearing set.

Hope this helps.

Wasn't the 4L85E available with the 8.1L in the PU as well a few years back or was the 8.1L only offered with the Allison?

I think you could get this to show up by using the "build your vehicle" option on the GM website, but I don't believe the pickups from 2001 on have a different automatic transmission option than the Allison with the big block or diesel.
