Cracked Windshield!!

:flag:

Less than a month old and I have been backed into and now I have a crack in the windshield.

The wife was on Rt 80w and a rocked fell from the sky and chipped the windshield.

I took it to Mr. Chips, (they fix window chips.) Mr. Chips tried a sort of stop drill technique and then applied a little pressure to the windshield and the chip splintered off in two different directions  It is now a 10" crack.

What are my options concerning a new piece of glass. Mr. Chips got me a quote for $350. from a glass shop. I have not received a quote from the Dealer yet.

Is this something I should only get from the Stealer (GM Part #) or is there a different/better aftermarket alternative?

My new truck is seeming awefull old right now.

You should be able to call your insurance company and get it for free. It's the law here in Florida that they have to replace it.

Your rates cant go up, or they cant drop you because of it.

I had to get mine done in the car about 3 years ago when I punched the windshield out.....(yes I was mad..we were trying to buy a house) lol

Some insurance companies lump full glass coverage into your comprehensive premium. Mine does (Nationwide). Not sure if that policy is a nation-wide thing or just specific to my state and some other, specific, states.

As far as which glass to get, get OE if you can afford it. Look around though, some glass companies will offer the same brand glass (I think GM uses PPG, not sure) for less than the dealer will sell it to you for. However, no matter what you get, you still run a risk of getting a bad piece of glass. My body-shop had to replace the window on my old truck twice one time, the first one had a defect.

Maybe while they are replacing the glass, you could get one from the Buick Rainier for '05, or the '05 Envoy Denali. They say they make the car a little quieter.

I believe it depends on the state.

When I lived in Colorado, windshield replacement was zero deductible. When I moved to Oklahoma, all I did was change my address. No changes to the policy.

I got a crack in my '02 last week, and they said that they dropped that automatically when I moved here.

:seeya: The crack is now extending all the way from the top to the bottom of the windshield.

I have come to understand that if I lived in NY or certain other states the glass would be fully covered. Not so in NJ, it falls under Allstate's comprehensive and I have a $500 deductable... lucky me!

Dealer said approx. $650 for OE.

Aftermarket is ranging from $250 - $350.

I am leaning towards Aftermarket.

There is a thread going on another forum regarding the windshields and the recall to fix some '05's. A poster said that for '05 the TB's and Envoys were getting the same acoustic laminated glass as the Rainier, which should cut down on some wind noise. If you go aftermarket, will the glass be as good? Are you positive your comprehensive deductable is same as collision with Allstate?

The Denali version is getting the special glass, not the XL or the TB.

I spoke with two seperate Allstate Agents on two different occasions, they said the same thing both times... $500 deductable. I wish there was a financially better solution.

I would spend the $500 to cover the deductable if there was a legitimate reason to get OE.

When I got the qoute from the dealer, he mentioned that there was another option called "NAGS" glass, it was $300 more than the OE. He didn't know what the difference was. Does anyone else?

It seems silly to not spend the extra $ 150-200 to get OE when the truck was $40K+ but when does it stop.

I think I have found a solution for my $500 deductable comprehensive windshield replacement.

I called Allstate one last time to ask what it would cost to change my deductable from $500 to $0, thats right $0. The answer was a surprise, it would change my premium by an additional $81 per year. Sounds like a no brainer to me, wouldn't you agree?

You could do that. The downfall comes when you decide you'll get every little ding fixed by the ins. company since you have no deductible. That's why my agent suggested I stick with a $500 deductible. Of course, I'm also in the land of 0$ glass coverage as part of comprehensive.
