Clunking when stopping?

Ok today i notice i am getting a nice clunk out of the front end when i come to a complete stop.  I have noticed this before but only after i washed my truck.  This has lasted 2 days now.  Wont go away

 

Any ideas?

Probably going to be the famed "driveline clunk"...there's a tsb for it.  I had it previously...noticeable during acceleration and while stopping as well.  Dealer's solution was to grease the splines.  The newest tsb has plans for a replacement of the slip yoke with a nickel plated one.  I haven't been able to talk my dealer into this, but the first time the greased the splines, cured my clunk.  Others have had it more persistently.  That'd be my educated guess.

well i kinda get this...but it's from the rear end and I feel it when I let my foot up off the brake when taking off...and sometimes if I stop real hard.  I feel this in the 83 chevy too....i dunno what it is?

Yes, yes...I'm a forum member.  That just made a crappy day slightly better.  Off work at least, but went to the local s&l to try to get pre-qualed for a first time buyer home loan...well I didn't bring all the paperwork I needed, but looking at the loan for the truck and the student loan that I have, as well as my fine earnings(not) as a suburban cop, the bank employee should've just laughed at me other than give me their figure for the maximum loan amount.  Oh well...mom and dad don't seem to have a problem with me here, though that changes from time to time...and I don't mind it...get enough space, etc...Couldn't see myself throwing money away on rent, so I guess it's time to regroup the financial strategy.  Oh well, sorry to ramble rant, but I needed that. ???

i have the driveline clunk.  That happens between the 1-2 shift.  THis seems different kinda like a creaking clunking noise when stopping.

You said you did have the TSB done for the steering shaft, right? Did they replace it, or just lube it? I can't remember what you said. Did you ever get your seatbelt problem fixed? I would take it in again and have them look at that steering shaft and replace your seatbelts like they did mine. If they did it before, make them do it again because obviously that didn't work You're still under warranty, aren't you? The fix for the tranny 1-2 shift didn't seem to do too much for me, but maybe it will for you.

Mine made the exact same noises you seem to be describing and it was always happening when I was stopping/slowing down.

Try taking off the driveshaft and greasing the splines.  This helped my truck-made it sound like new.  Now after about 3 months, it's coming back.  Here's what I posted under the Tech section:

 

"In a continuing effort to get rid of the annoying driveshaft clunk I ordered the 25-dollar-a-can grease from GM and I'm going to take the driveshaft back off again and re-grease the spline gear.  My buddy who owns a garage told me the grease I used the first time can get dissolved in the transfer case fluid and I should go ahead and change the TC fluid while I'm at it in case the grease is in the fluid.  

 

The nickel-plated slip yokes are still on backorder, and the parts guy at the GM dealer where I got the truck said they haven't had much luck with them doing away with the noises anyway.

 

So does anyone know how much TC case fluid I need to buy??  I'll let everyone know how well it works this time around. "

 

The noise on my truck occurs when I stop and start.  Hopefully the specified GM grease (part#12377985 Heavy Duty Chassis Lubricant) will do the trick, along with changing the trans case fluid.   Looks to me like the TC fluid is supposed to lube the transfer case output shaft but after it gets a little dirty it can't do it's job and the slip yoke binds and jerks against the rear output shaft.

 

Don't lose alot of sleep over the noise.  It's not doing any damage to the truck, but it does get on your nerves after awhile.  I really wish GM would've put a grease zerk on the slip-yoke so you would'nt have to pull it off to lube it.  Oh well.  It's about a 1/2 hour job to do it yourself and the tras case looks easy to drain and refill.

The clunking on my truck  was hard to figure out exactyl where it came from.  Sometimes it sounded like the rear, sometimes the front.  The point where the prop shaft fits onto the transfer case is directly under the cab and sometimes the noise sounds like it is right under you.  All I know is that when I lubed the thing-no more noise from anywhere when you stopped and started, exept for an occasional squeak from the front brakes.

i had the steering shaft replaced a long time ago. Thats not the problem

He also said he ordered me a new slip yoke, so I called today and asked where it was and he said the GM is advising the dealers to NOT install the newer slip yoke. The new one is not helping the problem. GM is apperently working on a new slip yoke that will cure this problem. Who knows when that will be.

I also have the same problem.  It is getting on my dang nerves so bad, I feel like they should replace the whole dang thing!!  Mine sounds like the truck has a stutter, or speech impediment or something.  Chirp chirp dert chirp!  Oh, its horrible.   :angry:

 

All I can say is GM better come out with something quick... or I am going to raise some hell.
