Wester's Tune MPG Update !!!!

Recommended Posts

I've already told y'all my 91/93 Wester's tune knocked 1.2 seconds off my 1/4 mile times, a HUGE increase. It is so d**n fun to drive  !!!

Well, I finally got my city-mpg numbers. Where I used to get 10.8~11.5mpg, I'm now getting 14.3~14.8 :cheers: !!!!!!!! Better than 3 mpg better- amazing !!!!

If there's any doubt, this should put it to rest...

I'll get some highway miles soon and report back. I'm confident I will see the same 3.5mpg increase, IF NOT BETTER. Can't wait to see.

I'm getting about 1 MPG better city with my HD 8.1/Allison and the Westers in 87 tune. Thinking of going to the 91/93 tune for even better MPG. Maybe...

Definetly go with the higher octane tune. There's is just so much more head-room with the higher octane, you will get a MUCH higher percentage of increase than the regular tune. It'll will pay for itself QUICKER, even after the additional cost of the premium fuel.

And you get all the extra HP to play with, too :chevy: !!!!

NO ONE should go with the regular tune if they have 91 or 93 available. I've heard complaints about the extra cost of premium, but they don't realize the return is greater. And you're only talking a $5~10 bucks per tank. Yes it adds up, but so do the extra savings :seeya: .

I am planning on getting a tune as soon as I regear my truck. I am pretty sure I am going with the 91 tune but I am not sure which one to go with (Westers or PCM4Less) Can I get some of you input on which is a better tune? Brian Herter at PCM4Less is well known on the Impala forums and I was going to get mine done from him but I ended up selling the car to get my truck...

I bet if you run the numbers, 95% of all drivers can never cost justify getting the PCM tuned, and those numbers will get worse if you tune to the premium tune. Now performance, that's a different issue...

Call me crazy but I've always been skeptical of the plus unleaded at the local station. Maybe one of you guys can run a poll, however unscientific it would be) to see how many run regular, plus or super.

My gut feeling is that when avg joe feels the need to splurge, he goes to super and skips the plus grade altogether, leaving the plus grade in the storage tanks longer causing it to be dirtier etc?????

Go with the Westers or Nelson. I don't want to go into details here. PM me if you want the scoop.

A lot of the time, the mid grade is mixed from the low octane and high octane fuels. This is not always the case, but a lot of the time, it is.

Nice to hear some real-world feedback. Now I was wondering about real-world price, can you share? I only ask because I dont really have any experience with the 'tune' thing, but the more I read the more I am headed down that path. Thanks for the info.

In a vehicle that is designed to run regular (like our trucks are) there isnt any advantage to run premum fuel. Only on high compression engines or supercharged, turbo charged is it needed. Using premum fuel actually slows down the burn time in the cylinder regular burns faster the faster the burn the quicker the engine revs. Using premum fuel on an engine that requires it like a Corvette ot a 3.8L supercharged engine is only required in warm temperatures above 75 deg depending on altitude. Our trucks have a 10.1 compression v/s a Corvette with 10.9 - 11.0 these engines are fast burn design to reduce spark knock compaired to the older 350's with slow burn. The gain is the gas statios and the oil companys getting your dollars. :seeya:

Very nice MPG gain! I run their tuning in my 8.1 Silverado HD and will probably have one made for my Duramax too.

I went with the 91 hot tune, but had Lyndon back it off slightly since I tow occasionally and don't want to take a chance of pinging for 250 miles all the way to the river, since we out here in California are not allowed to have fuel with an octane higher than 91. Around town I've been running mid grade and have had no serious pinging, only once in while when nailing it doing 80 going up a grade. Otherwise no worries. :chevy:

First, I forgot !! Gotta give at least a little credit to Mobil 1. Just changed over about two weeks ago. Don't know what difference in mpg it would make, but I bet it makes a little.

BGD, PCMforless does have a strong following in the Caprices/Impalas, but those cpu's aren't nearly as advanced as the new ones. NONE of the other tuners have near the experience Lyndon has. He's worked first hand for some of the bigger manufacturers, he's been at it over 20 years. Nelson's mentor :) !!!!!!

2004GMC, this is a premium tune. Your gains would be less with a regular tune. 100% of drivers would benefit from having their vehicle custom tuned to THEM, instead of the generic tune that it comes with from the factory.

Consider- every vehicle comes from the factory tuned to go anywhere in the US, run on crap gas, please everybody and offend nobody. It's gotta meet mpg numbers and emission requirements that vary from state to state. Why not have a tune calibrated just to you, where you live, for how you drive ?? Obviously, there are gains to be had with a custom tune.

Metz, my tune was $599, but that price has come down to $529. If you get in on one of the group buys (I did over a year ago  ) that happen a couple times a year, you can save a few dollars. But they're still worth every penny at full price :seeya: . Don't forget, they have lifetime upgrade warranty, lifetime manufacturer warranty and lifetime trade-in value. NO OTHER tuner offers all that :D !!!

redvett, you couldn't more correct about hi-octane fuel in a vehicle not designed for it. Waste of money, does nothing for power. But part of getting a custom tune is tuning it for higher octane, if you have it available and you choose to do so. You can have a tune burned for regular, but the fuel and spark maps won't be near as efficient as a premium map. Like I said, it gives more headroom for spark advance and combustion temps than regular-fuel offers. There's more to octane requirements than just compression ratio.

SS, keep a can of octane boost with you. It'll help when you need it :chevy: .

Tom, these things rule !!! How's the 8.1 tune ??

So if I have it right, at 25k miles per year, the 91 tune would most likely pay for itself in mileage in a little less than a year.

I'm no racer, so can I expect this sort of thing to make my 6.0L even stronger or more efficient while towing 3500lbs?
