Why Does my Mileage Suck

Recommended Posts

Hi I have a 2000 Gmc Sierra ext cab 4x4 with the 5.3 and 106,000 km on it right now. Anyways I am not getting very good gas Mileage ( does anybody know a site that converts metric gas mileage to imperial. Anyways though I think I'm getting about 16 mpg and I will list all the stuff I have done to the truck.

k+N ( Just removed think it was hurtin, cleaned maf and still no improvement)

Change diff fluid every year

I have no idea what might be the cause as I am running a bone stock set-up.

I would love to hear some suggestions ( I am fed up with my mileage )

Don't worry there are alot of guys on here that purchased thier trucks for gas milage just like you did. They will chime in eventually.

16 isn't too bad. That's about what I average with my truck also. 14 with mixed city/highway. On a very good day if I don't go too fast, I might get 18 with mine. Not bad mileage when you consider 15 years ago you were lucky to get 12 with a 350 half ton. Keep your foot out of it and go less than 70 and you might get 18-19.

I fret about mileage every now and then but then remember that I didn't buy this for mileage but for being a truck. A Geo Metro wouldn't pull my camper worth a darn.

:wtf:

Well to answer some questions I havce had the truck for 2 years now, and I know it's not a little car or anything. I have notiuced that it has been slowly sliding though. I am trying to figure what might be required to fix this, Might start as mileage but I wanna nip it in the but before it bites me in the ###.

Hello, to convert from KPL to MPG...multiply by 2.38...in the winter the gas mix causes the MPG to drop...maybe this is what is going on? Anyway, I am getting ~13-14 mixed (some due to using my remote start in the morning for 10 minutes or so, it is worth it :D ) and ~17 on highway....but in the summer I can get 15-15.5 mixed and 18-19.5 highway...l hope this helps, later, :fume::nopity::wtf:

I've got the 2500LD...6.0L. I know, apples to oranges...but I would be sooo happy with 16 mpg. I haven't broken 10 mpg for a while now. Ugly.

But even my '97 Z71 1500 would only get around 12-14. I'd be pleased.

I had a 2001 Silverado Z71, ext cab with 5.3L and 4.10 axle. I was happy to see 14 mpg with it for average driving. Most often it was down around 13mpg.

I babied it on the highway a few times and managed to get up around 16 or 17 cruising in OD at 70mph. I don't think 16 for mixed driving is that bad for any fullsized 4x4 pickup with a V8.

The 6.8L I have now averages 11/12 with a 3.73 and I'm even pleased with that.

If you think it should be better do a complete maintanance run off. Top end cleaner then change oil/filter, air filter, spark plugs & fuel filter. That's about all you can do on your own. I've seen a few guys get some pretty drastic mpg improvements by changing out an old fuel filter and that's cheap and easy.

Also make sure you got all four tires inflated to the door sticker specs. That's probably the most common reason for lower than normal mileage.

I agree with you on removing the K&N-mine never helped and I think it made it a little bit worse.

Chevy 1500, 5.3 and 3.73, getting 15-16 in town, 19 on trips, might be more on trips but I have never been empty on a trip yet. I know for a fact that a bed cover helps, it gave my Dakota a noticeable increase for hiway mileage.

16 is great mileage. I get 13.2 mpg with the same setup. Mostly city driving. If it's gotten worse over time your O2 sensors might be getting "old".

I'd kill for 16 mpg.

I get under 14 with mixed driving, or highway at 75 or so.

If I hit the cruise at 65 on the highway and keep it there for the full tank I get 21, but 16.... I'd be a happy camper if I could average that.

2001 ext cab 4x4 4.8L Avg 14.6 combined hiway/town. I see people claiming 18mpg around town. No way unless you are coasting downhill most of the time. If you are really getting 16, don't complain.
