Herculiner

I need to know if anyone here has a Herculiner bedliner. I'm restoring an old '76 VW Bus (which has been mentioned in other threads) and I'd like to coat the floor front to back with some kind of rubber bedliner material. However, I called Inyati (who, by the way, did a real nice job on my Silverado) and they quoted me $940.00 to do the VW's floor. They did my truck for only $300.00! The guy said that it's because they have to work around so much stuff in the van. I told him that the van is stripped completely (seats, dash, steering colum, wiring, all out) and the figure stayed the same. I mean, the van's not even worth that much so I'm not paying that kind of money for a spray-in. So, I had the thought of using a Herculiner instead. $100.00 beats $940.00 any day. So, I'm wondering if anyone who has a Herculiner can give a thumbs-up or thumbs-down. Thanks in advance.

What are you doing this for? If it's simply for insulation/sound deadening, you might as well put in some dynamat, it won't be as cheap as $100, but you could probably keep it pretty simple.

Fleabay has sound deadening material in bulk there, not necessarily Dynamat brand, but it could serve the purpose well.

Preperation is the name of the game.The better you prep the surface the better it holds.I did my truck when new and you can tell the spots that weren't roughed up enough..Not a great product but, not that horrible either.I say for your application,go for it...

Thanks for the replies.

Wrathbone-- I will be using dynamat for the doors, walls and roof but I'm not puting carpet on the floor so it won't really work. I'm also wanting to keep the rust at bay on the floor of the van. These busses are notorious for having a rusty floor inside because the method of sealing the windows eventually creates leaks and there are no drains so I didn't want carpet or rubber mats for water to get trapped under. The rubber mats are also $$$$$$$$.

JBZ71-- I plan to prep the floor very well. Thanks for the reminder. I think it should do rather well because it's not a cargo van so there will just be people's feet on the floor. Nothing too damaging.

If anyone else has experiences with Herculiner please reply.

I sprayed herculiner in the bed of my truck and it worked great for the price. The main thing is prep! If you are spraying it, use an undercoating spray gun so you get good heavy coats.

I agree about the prep being crucial. I did a herculiner in my '93. It held up well for about 2-3 years...then it began to fade and rub away. As it weathered it just didn't hold up.

I'm assuming that a majority of this was due to not properly prepping the surface. But it worked well for the price. If you're looking for something to last a long time, I think i'd skip the herculiner.

I've seen some that looked really good though...guess it depends on your time and patience.

Thanks for the info everybody. I think I'm gonna go for it. The van is really just a toy for driving occasionally so it's not going to get any hard use so I think the herculiner will be the way to go for the money. I can always buy another gallon later to patch and fix any chipping and what-not.

Oh, by the way, I had the fading issue bad on my bedliner. Herculiner has come up with a UV protectant that you can apply after the fact. It works awsome! If it is going to be exposed to the sun this will keep it from fading.

Have you looked into POR15 products? It is supposed to be real big among the hotrod and classic VW crowd. Also... check out www.thesamba.com if you haven't already. All the info you would ever want regarding classic VW's.

Funny you should mention. The website thesamba.com is where I found the '76 body that I'm working on. I'm driving a '74 with a really beat-up body so I found this '76 with no motor on thesamba. I drove over to San Diego and hauled it home to AZ behind my Silverado (chronicled in another thread). I really like that website.

Just don't go into the house to take a leak while you are putting this stuff on. But I don't want you to end up like the person a few years ago doing it and getting it on his you know what when he went to the bathroom. I wish I knew where that thread is, I would post it up.
