First Buck!!!

For the second weekend of deer hunting this year we went to a spot 12 miles from our property that we used to hunt 7 years ago. I went to a stand that morning and didn't see anything. We came back to the truck and had a sandwich and discuss what we had seen that morning. Nobody had seen anything yet. We went back out at about 10:00. I got to a different stand about 10:30, and began to sit and wait to see if I could see anything come by. 20 minutes later, here comes a big buck. This was the first buck I had ever seen while hunting. I had about a 110 yard shot and took it, but the deer had started to walk again. Only thing is, he walked closer to me! My second shot was about a 100 yard shot, I shoot again and he takes a few more steps and drops. BOY WAS I HAPPY! My first buck. I got to him and seen he was a nice 8 pointer. We never see bucks that big where we hunt. This was a big swamp buck. He weighed in about 235-240 field dressed. We figured about 280-285 live weight. Most of the deer we get up there are from 120 to 170 lbs. The guy that was with us had hunted that woods for 45+ years and said he never seen one that big in that area.

Sorry for the long story.  ???

Here are some pics

Congrats!  I must say that is one big bodied buck, I've only

seen one or two that even come close to that size of body.

I've seen several bucks that had bigger racks in the last two

years, but never one with a body that big.  That thing is huge!

:(

How many years have you been going deer hunting?  However

long it was, it was worth the wait to get a buck like that.  The

first buck I got would have been an 8 point (alot smaller) but he

had broken off one antler.  I was happy with it though.  I can

only imagine how happy you were.

That's one monster buck!  Nice even rack too.  Do yourself a favor and get it mounted since it's your first one.  Lot's of guys hunt for years just for the cance to kill one that nice (like me for example)!  Wish me luck-our season starts here (West Virginia) next Monday and I took the whole week off work.  My favorite time of the year!   :(  :P

BTW-what did you shoot it with?

Thanks guys! I've been hunting for 10 years now. We have hunted our property for the last 7. Before that was where I shot this one at. I plan on getting it mounted. Not sure if I will get the whole head or just the horns yet. We cut him up yesterday and got over 60 one quart bags of meat in the freezer.

HillHound: I shoot a Weatherby 25-06. It's one of the flattest shooting and quickest f.p.s. guns made. It has the shooting power of a 30-06, but will hit the target and not drop 10" like a 30-06.

Roofer,

Good deal!  I also deer hunt with a .25-06, but mine is a Model 700 Remington with a Leupold 4-12x.  That's a great all around caliber.  Here-I'll brag a little bit:  Last year I nailed a doe in the ribs in a hillside meadow @ 437 yards (distance verified by laser rangefinder).  Also have alot of fun shooting groundhogs with it in the summer.  Congrats again on the buck.   :(
