Change Engine Oil

Recommended Posts

Changed the oil in the 8.1 under regular maintenance. After the change, the "change enging oil" light comes on briefly after start up. I'm aware of the process to cxl the light, but why would it come AFTER i changed the oil?

just wondering...

My theory is that there is no reasoning behind that light. I believe that it comes on at set intervals even though GM says that it monitors the oil quality. If it was a dang light bulb I would take it out! :D:cool:

The Oil Life System doesn't actually look at the oil at all. It monitors engine conditions (speed, etc.) and adjusts a countdown from 100% to 0% based on those conditions (ie.- harder driving / higher RPMs or short trips without time for the engine to fully warm up result in the countdown running out in less miles). Basically it takes into account the same things we used to when we looked at the manual's recommended maintenance intervals (driving conditions, engine rpm, engine temperature) and automatically adjusts its rate of countdown.

If you change the oil before the Oil Life System reaches the 0% point but don't reset the system, it has no way of knowing the oil is new. So the countdown continues and it alerts you when it hits 0 (or whatever percent they've preset. Haven't hit mine yet on my truck :D).

If you plan to pay attention to the Oil Life System then you need to follow the procedure in your manual for your particular vehicle to reset it whenever you change to oil.

The oil life moniter does not know if you change the oil or not. I does not technically moniter the oil itself, rather the engine rpm and accumulated mileage since the last reset. The moniter is a guideline to changing your oil. Some people follow it, some just ignore it and reset it at every oil change so they do not get what you are experiencing. For example, if you change to synthetic, the OLM is unaware that it's thermal breakdown is much less than conventional. It is all relative, a good reminder for people who do not regularly change their oil. In my case just something to reset every 3000 miles. :D

We posted at the same time, sorry for the echo.

If you change your oil before the light comes on you have to still go threw the reset sequence even though the light is not on to reset the count down process or the light may come on soon after you change the oil and like above comments the oil monitor system doesnt know when you changed the oil.

I just reset my oil life on my DIC when ever I change my oil. The way to reset the Oil life % is to have the truck in the on position (the one right before start) and push the accelerator 3 times. The percentage will reset back to 100%

I don't pay any attention to the GM oil life system. I do reset it when I do my oil changes just so the light doesn't pop on when I'm driving and aggravate me. But the monitor system does not take things into account like towing, driving in dusty conditions, etc which have an impact on your oil life. I just change it every 5k and call it good.

Is that the same technique for the 2001-2002 models? I can't find my book on the truck, and forget the right way to reset it. I thought I tried what you said above, my Dad's '03 you reset it with the DIC, but mine doesn't have that.

Yup, that was the drill on my '02 and it's still the same on my '04 since I don't have the steering wheel buttons. Engine off, switch on, depress and release throttle pedal 3 time (all the way down and all the way up) within 5 seconds and in the '02 and earlier the pretty amber "Change Engine Oil" light will flash to let you know you got it right. In the '03s and newer the DIC will display "Oil Life Reset" or something similar to that.

    • You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling.
    • You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
    • Diesel hit $6.00 here today at the truck stop.   Payed $2.79 for E85 today too.
