Impression on the Duramax

well yesterday i went to the New York Autoshow at the Jacob Javits center and i was really impressed for my first time there. I can go on and on about all the cool things there that i did and saw, but ill get to the trucks. The trucks were downstairs and i was looking at the chevy ford and dodge diesels that were there. even though i really dont like the front end on the silverados now, the new ones didnt look to bad, it looks like they changed the hood shape a little bit. out of the 3, it was the most comfortable inside, but the guages and the radio and heater controls look like they havent changed since like, 2002, but since im not in a chevy everyday, i couldnt tell. the ford has come along way in the interior, but it wasnt as comfortable, but i like the looks of it. and the dodge wasnt bad, it was comfortable and i liked the looks. the one thing i did notice was that the dodge and ford sat higher than the chevy did, now is that b/c the chevy has independent upfront or what? just thought id post what i saw and what i though, and even though im just turning 16, the one thing i really love is trucks, mostly diesel to. i dont know anyone with the duramax, but i know people with the ford and dodge, so thats why i dont know much about the chevy, but as soon as i get enough money, id really like to get test all of them and see what i really think about them. now i know alot of you also tested the other 2 before buying the duramax, so what did you think about them when you drove them?

Ive rode in a new cummins and in a 2003 duramax, my personal opnion is that the Duramax is much quiter, less smelly, and i think alot more powerful....just my 2 cents

I drove my uncle's 2004 Ram Cummins 3500 6 speed and that was a fun truck. It was the funnest truck I've ever drove, mainly because of the manuel and the diesel combo. It wasn't that great on the inside though, and I'm concerned about the other stuff on the truck(it's a Dodge). I have also driven my buddy's dad's 2005 Duramax/Allison. I have driven this one the most. Overall, I like the D/A the best. It had great power(as good as the Cummins) and was extremely nice on the inside(SLT). We go out to Arkansas for duck hunting several times every year and it did great on both trips. It also tows their MF tractor very good, it's like it isn't back there. I haven't driven a 6.0 PSD, so I can't comment on it.

The Dodge was nice, but it wasn't good enough for me to convert from GM.:thumbs:

Honestly, I like the Dodge better than the Fords. The only Ford interiors I like are the King Ranchs and Lariats. I know those are the top level trims, but I really don't like the others. My main complain with the redesigned Ford interiors is how flat and squared off the dash looks. Everything looks like it is boxed in and is flat across the surface. The Ford website has a pic of the dash if you haven't seen it. Another complain I have is how flat the seats are. One of my bosses has a 2005 F150 Lariat 4x4 crew cab, and I noticed right away that the seats weren't very good.Of the Big Three, Chevy has the best interior by far.

I love my Duramax..I have the 2004.5 LLY. I just got the 4" Magnaflow system for it today.

Already installed a Volant Cool Air Intake. Now I can't wait to see what the exhaust does for it.

Never been in a Ford truck, my sister has an Expedition though. Its interior is horride imo. She has the mid trim level (don't know what that is called) and cloth seats. The cloth isn't even fuzzy like my truck, it is like a rough, polyester, mesh or something. Feel more like my ski jacket. I also don't care for the radio, AC layout, and for people complaining about GM's interior being outdated, her interior looks very similar to the first year Explorer my Mom had. Still have those horride green display, that looks like an old alarm clock.

    • have you stuck with dealer oil changes since then? I made the same switch after getting tired of crawling around under the truck, but I’ve found some dealers are way better than others about getting you in quickly. Curious if yours has been good about scheduling or if you’ve had to look elsewhere for quicker turnaround.
    • Thank you.   I am set on a 3.0 Duramax as my previous truck with a Ford Ecoboost had just as many, if not more, "common" issues.  Cam phasers, timing chain issues, 10-speed valve body and CDF drum, emissions issues, etc.  So I figured, why not get 2x the fuel mileage (these things got 27+mpg on every mixed city/highway test drive I put them through) and better towing capability with resale value to boot?   My minimum, shortest trip will be 50 miles 1-way and I regularly go out of state with a travel trailer.  I'm planning on using this for a marketing/event promotion business also, which would require regular towing of trailers for bands, DJs, sound and lighting gear, along with my personal camera gear for filming events.   Looked at other trucks in the $30k+ price range but the issues seem to be everywhere, plus too many with gaudy mods.  I'm literally sticking with RWD trucks because they tend to be actually used as trucks, vs. the 4x4 models I've seen with unsafe lifts, huge tires, and general mods that would affect reliability (I'm wondering if some of them were tuned, hence the aggressive throttle response and hard shifting).   So my goal is to find a stock, 3.0 with 1 or 2 owners, in good physical condition, and decently well maintained.  Can't seem to find that up here, everything in the $27-30k range has had multiple owners, smoke smell, issues, or body damage.  Or the ridiculously modified trucks with 80k miles for under $27k but lots of problems...
    • That’s pretty tough Grumpy. I reread the previous few posts. They all reference oil changes. Much like your last thread. In my humble opinion it keeps things interesting.
    • Engine Wear and ISO 4406   1.) Cold Starts. 2.) High Particle Count. 3.) Low operating temperature viscosity and high low temperature cranking viscosity. 4.) Depleted AW, Friction and Acid packages.  5.) High engine load.    https://me.caltexlubricants.com/en_me/home/learning/from-chevron/heavy-duty-diesel-vehicles-and-equipment/The-Importance-of-Clean-Engine-Oil-and-Its-Impact-on-Equipment-and-Business-Performance.html   High particle counts have five sources. 1.) They are manufactured within the engine. Both wear debris and amalgamation of degradation products and combustion driven soot (worse in GDI). 2.) They are ingested via intake air. Ever hear the best oil filter is a good air filter? 3.) They are entrained in the fuel. 4.) This one is insidious. They are introduced in 'fresh oil'. 5.) They are introduced during the oil change.   ISO 4406 is the test that measures and quantifies the combine effects of all of the above particle related issues. You can mitigate your way into multiples of engine life by being attentive to them all.    https://www.hyprofiltration.com/blog/is-new-oil-clean   (from the link above)    [Quote] What Is the Recommended ISO 4406 Cleanliness Code for New Oil?   A good upper limit for new oil cleanliness is 16/14/11 (ISO 4406). Typical new oil usually has ISO codes of 19/17/15 or worse, which is far too dirty for sensitive components. This can be a major cause of degradation and premature failure.
