Exhaust Question

I'm not trying to put together a race truck, but I'm getting dual exhaust installed on my truck when it gets here and they have two options (1: Flowmaster  2: Gibson).  The Gibson setup will cost more and the ProShop guy is telling me it's worth a few more horses than the Flowmaster setup yet it's quieter.  I like the idea of quieter exhaust that performs better (getting old I guess).  Anyone here with the Gibson setup?  I know I'll have to add tips if I get the Gibson rear exiting setup, but that's a minor detail.  Thanks in advance for your help.

I have the Gibson Dual Sports on my truck. I have heard Flowmasters before and that is why I opted for the Gibsons. Like you, I'm getting older, and don't need the noise on a daily basis. The Gibsons sound very nice, and they will make enough noise to satisfy you when you want to make noise. But they are hardly noticable around town for us old guys. I like the performance they give, and they are made well. I got the stainless pipes, which were a little more, but I live in a salt water enviroment, so aluminized is not going to last like the stainless pipes. On the Dual Sports, the tips they sent would not fit, because the pipes are too close together. They were "clanging" when installed. I like them without the tips anyhow. I sold the tips to a buddy for $40, so I re-cooped at least some of the money I spent on the entire system.

You didn't say what truck you have, but here are some shots of my setup...

The installation was a piece of cake. Did it myself during my lunch hour..... OK, so it took me an hour and 10 minutes.  (I have an understanding boss)  :)

I have the Flowmaster 70.  I have some resonance at 80 or above but love it otherwise,  good deep tone and really works well with my FIPK to really open up the truck.  The increase in all around performance is well worth the resonance at 80.   Check out my pics at

I've got the flowmaster 40 series and I don't know, I can't really hear all that much in the cab w/ the windows up.  Outside the truck it sounds great and has a really nice rumble to it.

Thank you all very much for your responses.

Victory Red,

Thanks for the input.  I'm hoping to go with a rear exit exhaust (though that's not set in stone).  The dealership said they could do that with the Gibson setup.  They didn't mention whether or not the system was stainless so now I've got an intelligent question to ask (thanks).  I don't have my truck yet (I got confirmation on my order yesterday though  :)  ).  It should be here by the end of Feb or Beginning of March (which seems like forever right now).  It's going to be a lot like your truck.  Z71 Reg cab, sportside with lots of options.  It will be Indigo Blue w/ tan interior though and have the 40/20/40 bench.  From looking at what you've done with yours, I'm really glad you're on this board.  I'm probably going to have a lot of questions for you (though I don't expect to do as much with my truck as you've done with yours - very nice btw).

gandolphxx,

So the Gibsons have an 1800rpm drone on yours?  Of course, your engine could probably suck mine through the throttle body.

I've actually got a couple of stainless magnaflows in my attic (from a previous sports car I owned that will go unmentioned).  They do flow great (you can see right through them) and they are surprisingly quiet.  I know that they are really good with SC setups because of the high flow (provided you solve the other restriction issues like the cats and the stock manifolds).  I'm somewhat limited to what the pro shop at the dealership will install though as I'm trying to get it all thrown in to the financing instead of parting with my limited on-hand cash.  Magniflow seems partial to side exhaust on their site?  I wonder if taking the exhaust over the rear axle causes too much restriction?  Thanks for your help.

TahoeJeff,

Is everybody on this board racing these things  ;)  .  Your setup looks very nice.  That's the kind of rear exit exhaust I want.  Thanks for your help.

Chevy4x4trucks,

Between you and TahoeJeff, I have a new question:  What does the series mean?  40 series vs 70 series?  I've got a co-worker here with flowmasters on his ext cab 4x4 (6.0 Vortec) and it's pretty darn aggressive sounding.  I doubt the 5.3 I'm getting will sound anything like that no matter what exhaust I put on it, but I'm opting for "less is more" when it comes to sound output.  Thanks for your help.

I was going to check their site but all I get is "You do not have permission to access the requested file on this server."  They must have heard that I was looking at the Gibsons  ;)
