Fun in the Snow

Well as alot of you are aware, we are getting hit with a mild blizzard here in Colorado. Woke up to almost a foot and a half of the WET HEAVY POWDERY STUFF, got the old Ariens snowblower out, (fired her up last night just to make sure she would run) got the driveway done, but darn it the snow was just too much and I broke off one of the sheer bolts on that thingie that throws the snow. <sigh> :D I decided to take a little drive down to my church to pull out the snowblower there and do the walks, The truck does ok.. Not too impressed with it but it got me there, for some reason I don't think my locking rear diff is working the way it should. I still wish I had my old 89 Cherokee, that thing was a blast to drive in the snow, never got me stuck once and I went places in it that my truck most likely would have gotton stuck in. That being said, I still am glad I have my Truck, its served me well.

Sucks to be you, 75 degrees here today!  Great day for teaching people to ride!

Maybe if you do not like snow but some do and the views in the Denver area are awesome at times too!

Hey Ryan!

I live up north of you, near Longmont.

We had the same thing here today.

I took the dozer blade off the rider yesterday and mowed the yard! Woke up today, couldn't even see the yard, and wondered why I didn't leave the dozer blade and t-t-t-tire ch-chains on! I ended up just scooping paths where I needed to go and tonight, it's pretty much all gone anywhere there is pavement. I think the snow is pretty much over up here.

I took the truck for a ride to the grocery store and didn't even need 4x4. One thing you might notice is when the locking diff kicks in is that the rear wants to slide sideways. That action has it's pro's and con's. If you're on a crown and near a ditch, you're goin' in! You have to learn to control it.

Too bad you toasted your snowblower over something that will be gone tomorrow afternoon... I didn't even try. I watched Nascar all dam day! :banghead:

Always worth having a couple of spare shear-bolts for a snow blower. Often they are just a regular bolt, but do not go over on the grade though.

Had to plow twice up here in Bailey, once at about 10" and again today with over 20" total. A little WD-40 on the blade helps keep this wet snow from just wadding up and not sliding off to the side. Have about a mile of private road plus 4 turn-around areas. Sun is out and melting fast though.

<sigh> fixed the sheer bolts, but then a few min later the stupid rubber drive belt for the thrower snapped so there you have it :banghead: I want to put that old Snowblower out of it's misery but it sure saves my back alot of pain from shoveling

Wet snow can be tuff on blowers. When we had our big before xmas storm here this past winter (about 20 inches of wet snow) on one big job I had 2 out of 3 snowthrowers shear pins and only one survived the storm with mishap. It was a 5hp Ariens 2 stroke single stage. That thing is tuff as nails and never failed me once last winter.

I think it was just a bad snow blower storm because I was doing my driveway with my 12HP 30 inch Toro when I sucked up and attempted to shoot out sundays Denver post needless to say that did not work. I dont even take the paper so I didnt look for it and since it happend on my first pass I spent the next hour and a half ripping small bits of news paper out.

I live in south Denver and we got about 17 inches. The only time that I needed 4 wheel drive was in Walmarts parking lot [had to get a new sled].

Elizabeth, CO here...got about 3 feet and was stuck there Sunday/Monday...was watching my parents' place while they were out of town. Had fun clearing the road with the Case skip loader, don't get to play with it much anymore. Cleared the driveway when I woke up Sunday, again around 6pm and the next morning too. Talk about a losing battle. Got some pics of driving my truck around in it though, snow was up to the plastic side strips

I might get blasted for this, but, I believe there's not a better off-road capable vehicle off the dealer's lot than a Jeep, whether it be a Wrangler, Cherokee, or even the Grand Cherokees. I had a 98 TJ wrangler, and I miss it every single day. It never got me stuck, never failed on me, and got better gas mileage as a bread-box with tires than my 2002 computer designed pickup gets. I had it when I lived in Albuquerque and Minnesota, and it took the snow better than any vehicle I drove. I had it here in west Texas when we had a major ice storm that shut down the highway from where I live now and where I used to live. I had to make the drive home, and although it took me 4 hours to drive 90 miles on ice with a little snow, I puttered along in 4-high, and passed more pickups and cars off in the ditch than I could count. I had to stop once to "relieve myself" (mind you, it was a 4 hour trip), and I could barely stand up it was so slippery. I hopped back in, and puttered on my way. LOVED my jeep.

Now, with that said and with my new bi-weekly trips to my son's house 90-miles away, I LOVE my pickup. LOTS quieter, TONS smoother, and a lot more room to bring back his toys/clothes.

Well we received a decent amount up here in Greeley, but it must have been warmer here because the roads were only wet and it was melting pretty fast. I would say we pry had 7-9 inches.

You gotta love Colorado. I live near Glenwood Springs and we got no snow. Same thing happened in 03 when the Front Range was pounded by feet of snow, I was outside watering plants in the bright sun and in my shirt sleeves.

A old CJ is tuff to beat off road but not a very stable vehical on ice and the grand cherokee is not much better either as I have seen many in the ditch on icy roads when their owner thought they were safe with 4x4. Several winter ago I say a double CJ/YJ wreck on the interstate. It seem that the first one went accross the overpass and spun out on the ice with its short twitchy wheel base and went into median and about 2 minutes later another one just like it spun out same place and hit the other one in the median and cause personal injury and totaled both jeeps. Many other vehical wnet across that bridge including myself without mishap before during and afterwards. While CJ's a great for tight place on road that lack stabilty in other areas. As far a snow passanger tanks, I have found nothing that will beat a old Suburban in heavy snow as they do well even it 2wd and are tanks in 4x4 in snow and good stabilty but clumsy offroad in tight places. I have a 89 4x4 burb that is cherry still that I bought new with 170K now that we just use for family trips and recently got near 18 MPG on a trip to Tenn few weeks ago. It is still a fine family truckster.
