Them Thingies

Recommended Posts

Went to a baseball game tonight and took a look at a Chevy Silverado.  Heard about some rubber L-shaped thingy attached to the bed, between the cab and bed and wanted to see what people were talking about.

You don't find them on all the trucks (GMC and Chevy), mine don't have em.

Sure enough, there they were.  First time I've seen them.

Anybody knows what they are and what they're for?  I'm kinda thinking they're to help cut down on the air-turbulence noise around the cab as you're cruising down the highway.  Any ideas?

I'm not exactly sure what you're talking about, but my truck has these rubber things that run verticle between the cab and the front of the bed...  I wondered what their purpose was, and figured it was to reduce wind noise...  they were on my '00 1/2 ton too...

I do believe they are for the wind noise as mentioned before.  I think Bob Prim had a post about them over at the Pacific Audio Forum a while back.  If I remember correctly, his truck didn't have them, but he ordered them and put them on.  I think he had to atach them with double sided tape or some kind of adhesive because his truck bed didn't have the holes in it already that the pieces mount in.

Does anyone have a picture of what we are talking about here???

Check your email Newbie...  I sent you a couple of pics...  I couldn't post them because I don't have an acct anymore.  Feel free to post them if you'd like.

If they do in fact reduce wind noise, I want 'em!  Question would be "How in heck do you mount them, being in-between the bed and cab, all of 1 1/2 inch!?

Thought about getting some foam type pipe insulation and jamming them in there to see/hear what it does to the wind noise.

I always suspected a lot of wind noise was coming from in-between the bed and cab due to the shape of the front edge of bed "scooping" the slip-stream.

Newbie, if you can post pictures, do so.  Give everybody a idea of what I'm talking about.

You could probably use double sided tape and something that woudl fit in there to press it down with, like an old broom handle or something similar.  I've been thinking about doing the same thing.

As far as pipe insulation, I did that on my '91 Silverado and it worked.  I just got the biggest diameter I could find so it would fit good and tight.  I forgot all about doing that until you mentioned it.  LOL

When you say it worked, what are you meaning?  That it cut down on wind noise or what?

I do believe they are for the wind noise as mentioned before.

But do they actually cut down on wind noise?

The pipe insulation cut down some of the road noise.  I noticed it mostly when I had my sliding window open.

The thing on the new trucks I'm not sure of.  I don't think I've ever rode in one with them that I know of.  The guy to contact is Bob Prim at the Pacific Audio Forum   I'm pretty sure it was him that installed them on his '99.
