I am planning on buying new 3/4 ton diesel this summer. What is a good price? My neighbor is a dealer and says he can sell it about $400 over dealer cost. Is this a good deal? Do you think I can beat him down below dealer cost. I realize dealer cost is not what they pay for it. Thanks

I think that's a pretty good deal, especially since the DMaxs sell so well. See if he will keep the rebates or if it is $400 above dealer cost minus the rebates.

There is a 3 to 5% hold back on truck plus dealer incentives that you do not even know about. On a 40k truck at 400 over invoice they dealer is still making at least $1600 bucks and likely more so in my book that is not a great deal. Invioce it a good starting point and below that plus rebates. I know it is a Dmax but there are other brand diesels out there too and they could do better. I will not even talk to a dealer today that will not start at invoice plus incentives to start with.

Try going to CarsDirect.com. They can give you a good starting point. They list all regional rebates, cash back deals, etc. If no one can match their price, you can always go with them.....And I think they'll even deliver it to your home.

Good Luck. :P

For an 05 or an 06? Doubt the dealer will peddle an 06 with the 6speed that low, so soon, unless you can benefit from something like supplier discount.

I wish I could find a dealer that would sell a GMC Duramax for $ 400.00 over invoice. I have told different dealers that I know about the hold back and they just look at you and smile. I have yet to find a dealer that will sell one for less than $ 1,000.00 over cost here in No. Ca. The GMC's sell fast and the dealers know it. I think one could get a better deal on a Chevy but when I'm spending forty grand I need to like the way the truck looks.

Just a suggestion- but I always deal with the fleet manager. Most of the ones I come in contact with work off of zero commission. Their only job is to sell volume, and all of the 6-7 trucks / suv’s that I have bought since 2001 were sold at dealer cost + rebates and incentives. As far as the hold back cost - the only time I’ve made progress on reducing the hold back was when I ordered my Furd, and I was only able to take a $500 bite out of that. Hold back is the dealers’ bread and butter.

There is a dealer in Ohio that sells all cars, trucks, etc... at exactly $99 over invoice. Doesn't matter if the vehicle is on the lot or if you order it. The price for every vehicle is fixed. They also kick you the rebates and incentives. They won't cut into the hold back, as someone else put it, that is their bread and butter. Still, with a no haggle policy at that price I couldn't complain. I think this was a Chevy dealership however. That isn't a problem for me since I like the looks of the Chevy better than the GMC but everyone has their own taste. I'll see if I can dig up the link for them and post it.

I guess the bottom line is that $400 probably isn't bad but I don't think he is doing you any super big favors. I think invoice would be a very good deal and if he is a friend he would do that for you. However another factor can be ordering it. Most of the dealers here locally, VT & NH will do a lot more on a vehicle on the lot than they will on an order.

Good luck!

How do you expect these guys to keep their doors open if they don't make money. Sure they have holdback but can you imagine the cost of doing business for the dealers. I know that alot of dealers are sorry but if you can find a good one that has good customer service, you oughta let them make some on it. Not saying pay MSRP but 400 over cost isn't a bad deal. Everyone's gotta make a living. If they don't make any money, they won't be around too long.

Well there is a stealership in Bartelsville OK. that sells Dodges and Honda's. at 300 below invoice, plus you keep the rebates. But they don't advetise at all. I MEAN NONE.

It helps keep the cost down. They do most of there sales via the internet.

Now there is a nother one in St. Louis that sells them 1000 below invoice, and the only advertising they do is word of mouth via the Dodge forums.

Now how they stay in business I don't know. But they do, and I wish all dealerships were like that.

Well for what its worth, I hate you because I am jealous of you :chevy:

Good luck to you on the new truck. And that is a good price, on a high demand truck.

I see your point but I can’t buy into that way of thinking. Dealers have the opportunity to say “no” just like you have it. If they’ll sell at / or below dealer cost then it’s their decision and I will take advantage of it. For every smart buyer there are 5 buyers that they’ll take to the bank on the purchase of a new vehicle and/or the trade-in on their prior vehicle.

If a dealer gives me great service I will plug his dealership every chance I get to potential buyers.

Here’s the plug:

Brian Catrina, Fleet Manager 866-443-9067

Huffines Chevrolet, Lewisville, TX (Dallas)

He’ll gladly sell you a truck at dealer cost any day of the month, and he’ll throw in all incentives and rebates that are available for your type of purchase.

The dealer's make a killing on financing. I didn't know this for a long time, but on bank loans they "mark-up" the interest rate to the consumer. Considering that alot of people don't qualify for GMAC's 0% financing, they have ample opportunity to offer bank loans with a little something tacked on for their "effort".

All the dealership owners around here are multi-millionaires! I have been to a Chevy dealership where the owner had parked his Lamborghini in the service garage. Another Chevy dealership owner often shows up in his new Range Rover or BMW.

I have no pity for car dealerships! :chevy:

Where they really make their money is on servicing them, not always on selling them, especailly in todays market.
