Gas Prices/SUV's

Not ONE of those people complaining about SUVs knows why ANY of the people they're complaining about actually owns the SUV. For all they know, that family has 4 children and needs the extra space. There are 3 pickups, an SUV and 3 cars in my family, not all at the same house. ALL of the trucks have actually been used for the intended purpose, to HAUL STUFF. 2 of the trucks (the SUV and one of the pickups) have even seen many miles of towing duty.

That's not to say the high prices don't hit the pocket, they certainly do, but they haven't changed how much I (or anyone in my family) drive. Come winter, or god-forbid an accident, and I'd MUCH rather be in my S-10 than any car.

Another thing, why start complaining NOW about blocked vision? What about all those service vans, semis, cargo vans, ANY cargo truck? They all block vision A LOT worse than ANY SUV will, and have since before SUVs were around! I can't tell you how many times I've had trouble backing out of a parking spot because of some MINIVAN with those DEEPLY tinted rear windows parked next to me, you can't see through them.

Where's that soapbox smiley?

Typical "Small Man Syndrome" if you ask me. Sounds like a bunch of NERDS who can't afford the price of admission, not to mention the cost of operation are releasing their envy from their podium.

While I admit, gas prices going up are harder to take, everything else is going up as well. Work harder, smarter and write the checks. I will live the way I choose to live, not in an econo-box because I am too cheap to go BIG!

Just my thoughts! :P

They could solve the blocked vision problem by upgrading to a highly hated suv/truck. It'd be pretty entertaining to make a debate event or something out of this topic...the enviro-nazis seem like they get pretty jacked up over all this.

It slays me when they talk like SUV's were created a few years ago. The Suburban is over 50 years old!!!

Full Size trucks, Blazers, Broncos and led sleds like 60's and 70's Lincoln's and Caddy's were very popular when Mazda and Datson were making cars. Gas and Insurance killed the muscle car era, but you could still get a 1976 Lincoln Town Car with a 460 or a Caddy with a 500+ cu in engine!! That was mainstream America and the folks driving Pintos were not crying like babies and grinning at the pumps when the "full size family wagon" paid $10 to fill up instead of $5!

I love my truck and my Suburban. Call me old school, but the last 5 years of my life are the only driving years of my life that I did not own at LEAST one big block truck and there are days I miss that, even at the pump!

This was a major topic over on the Edmunds forums for a while. I used to keep track of it pretty faithfully but got tired of all the ridiculous excuses and reasoning used by the anti-suv crowd. As was pointed out somewhere else here personal transportation makes up such a small percentage of the total oil / gas use and pollution creation in our country that attempting to tie any specific group of vehicles (SUV or otherwise) as a major cause is just plain idiocy. Worse, higher fuel prices hit everyone in other ways besides at the fuel pumps- our commercial transportation fleets don't run on water, and that means it costs more to transport. When the cost of transporting goods goes up, so does the cost of the goods to the end purchaser..

Well, let me see. You can't tow a fifth wheel trailer with a car or and SUV for that matter. So I got my truck.

The wife just bought a Trailblazer. Not a big gas guzzler, but she wanted a 4x4 with enough room for the family and still be able to fit in the garage.

Let the nerd ride their bikes to work, they make good speed bumps.
