Does the handle move, but the taligate won't release from the sides?

If so, the rods may have come out of the handle. I can give you further details if that's the case.

I'm sure others can too. :P

Does anyone know how to get a reply from the expert?

I'd say the first step would be to post the question. :P I didn't see one in this post. Was there one previously?

Not that you asked, but here's my chance to point out a few things...

I'm not really crazy about the "GM expert" title of the forum. I have worked for GM dealers for years (35 to be exact), and have worked in most areas, but I don't have all the answers. Am I an expert? Yeah, in some areas. Or at least more of an expert than the average truck owner.

If I don't have any answer whatsoever, I usually leave it for others that have had some experience with the particular topic. No point in me responding just to say, "I don't know."

Also, I do this voluntarily and this consumes a fair amount of my time, so I tend to ignore something that has a zero amount of information. If I have to spend a lot of time going back and forth trying to drag out some basic information, I just skip it. They don't pay me for this or even give me any special priviledges here. I'm just like you or anyone else for the most part.

Yep, the handle function perfect, I can hear the levers working, put the latch release, which apprears to be on the left side of the gate, doesn't move...

However, I'm not positive that there's only one latch on the gate, but I don't hear anything of the right side of the gate when I move the handle....maybe there are 2 rods, and the right one is off?

Any help would be appreciated...

PS- r u the gm expert, if not, what's his logon name? how do you know when he's replying?

Sorry, for the confusion, my only question was a result of already posting a question a few days ago (another thread) and not getting a reply...

regarless, here it is again,

My 99 GMC Sierra tailgate is stuck shut... the hanlde lifts, I hear the mechanism working (it's comming fromthe left side of the gate where it meets up against the brake light) but it won't open.

I know there's a recall on the gate straps, but that's for correcting the gate from falling off, mine stays on real good....too good ...

Any advice?

PS- I just signed up to GM-Link because it advertised mechanic's manuals online ie (free),.... it only had the owner's manual for my truck... no help...

Yeah all you have to do is pretty much ask in this forum.

And you will get a reply soon enough, just like you did.

But lots of guys here are also qualified to answer most of the questions.

But we do need to be appreciative of those who do answer questions FOR FREE. And how they offer there expert advice FOR FREE.

So thanks :P to all you GM experts who offer free advice, and knowledge.

There's a latch on each side. When you lift the handle, two rods are pulled that releases the latches.

Hopefully, one of the rods came off at the handle. That's the most common thing that happens and relatively easy to fix. On occasion, one of the rods will pop loose from the latch instead. Those are a real pain to correct.

There is no access to the latch if the tailgate is stuck closed. Just a couple weeks ago I spent 45 minutes with a flashlight, a mirror and the rod, trying to catch the lever in the latch so the gate could be released. We finally got it, but there was a point there where we thought we were going to have to go to our body shop and cut a hole in the inside of the tailgate on the side that the rod came off.

Ask nicely?

as to the real point of the question. can't you take a screwdriver slide the plunger thing (not the rod but the physcal piece that does the holding of the tailgate shut) to get it open? I've seen it done on other brands and my old 68 it would work on, never had to use it on the new trucks.
