Got great mileage this weekend!

Put on 260+ miles on with 13.5 gallons of gas this weekend! I also had my 600 lb. ATV, a generator, and other misc. stuff in the truck for about 75% of the time. 75% hiway miles, the rest gravel road and small towns. I drove nicely like I normally do (like a grandma), but I was impressed! Never really checked my mileage before, but I am happy knowing what I get now. Just thought  would let ya'll know.

Later

sorry, BTW it's about 19-20 mpg

Sounds good. I think I am around the 20 mpg combined country roads/freeway. I will be able to tell in two or three weeks when i have to fill it again.

Did you have your speedo reprogrammed for the 285's?  Or did you just figure the tire size in...

Or if you figured your milage with the stock calibration and those big tires then you probably got closer to 21.5 mpg's!!!

Either way...  WOOOHOOO!!!

Shaners,

I still have the stock 265s. I am planning on changing to BFGs and Bilsteins in the future. I am not sure if I will change to 285s.

I have new mileage (worse) :(.

Same amont of gas (13 gal.), but this time driving was: to work, using AC, and idling a bit at jobsites. I am only gonna get about 200 miles out of this 13 gals. Oh well, still better than any stinkin' Dodge or Ford! hehe!!

I have a 2001 chevy 4x4 reg cab shortbed. I took a trip this last weekend, some interstate and highway driving and only got 18 mpg. I dont know how you guys are getting 20. Oh yeah I have the 4.8 V-8.

There are alot of factors that affect MPG. A K&N filter helps out a bit, if you don't already have one. Another factor is your gear ratio. 3.73's or 3.08's will get better mileage than 4.10's. Another thing is how many miles you have and if the motor is broken in yet. I have 39K on mine and it seems better on mileage than it did in the past. These are the things I can think of now. Anone else have any suggestions?

jaslo,

I have basically the same truck as you except mine is a stepside. I think they a few pounds lighter. I also have a K&N drop-in and 3.73 gears with 1600 miles on mine. I am not heavy footed and am getting  high 16s to low 17s on country roads. I don't have a good freeway numbers yet because I have yet to take the all mighty road trip. That is comming because I am craving lobsters. I will keep you posted on milage.

With the LS1 based Vortec truck engines mileage and performance will continue to increase with break-in up to about 10,000 miles, maybe even a little past.

Best mileage in my '99 was 19 mpg on a road trip, running 75-80 mph with the AC on the interstate.

I do have the 3.73 gear ratio and I am approaching about 5,000 miles.  I just recently added a ARE tonneau cover and does it look sharp. Dont have ak&N airfilter in yet, but maybe in  the future

i'm envious...

With flowmaster, K&N fipk and 285/75/16's, my '99 x-cab, z-71 with 52K gets 18ish mpg on the interstate at 60mph (with the tailgate down).  16 at 70 and 14.5 at 75.  that's easing right onto the i-state after filling up and only stopping for fuel, food and "waste-disposal."

well, i guess you don't buy a truck for mileage...
