:thumbs::thumbs: I have a 2005 GMC 3500 4x4 6.0L gas eng. I have been told that there is no external fuel filter. Apparently GM changed design in 2004. I travel to Mexico frequently where occasionally you get a slug of gas with fine silt (dirt) in it. Currently after several trips I find it necessary to change the Fuel filter on my old 1990 suburban which has an external fuel filter up under the frame. Did GM actually think an external fuel filter which is easily changed on the road was not necessary? Did they change the pore size on the filter sock in the tank to a smaller size? If so will it potentially clog up and require dropping the fuel tank on the road to alleviate a clogged filter? If not will the silt which passes the sock filter in the tank cause the multiport fuel injectors to clog or cause premature engine cylinder wear? Is there anyone who might have some technical advice on this so that I can reasonably fix my vehicle on the road should i get some bad gas?

The EPA required the gas tank vapor emissions to be reduced and this change is for all MFR's. This system is now called the returnless fuel system there is no return line and the result is cooler fuel and lower emissions & more HP. You must use First Tier Quality Fuel. The system is supposed to be good for 100K+ use good fuel and you will be OK.

Well when you get over 100K if you used top tier fuel than you probably would have to change pumps anyway. I wouldnt worry about it. I have had 13 trucks since FI was available in 87 and average 1000 a month without a fuel pump failure and have never changed a filter either. I dont expect to on my current truck. Your wasting your money.

Personally, I think an external or extra fuel filter is a good idea. It doesn't matter which kind of gas you buy it all has a little bit of crap in it and an extra filter is not a bad thing. I wouldn't call it a waste of money, I'd call it piece of mind. :chevy::D

Previously we had a fuel system that returned unused fuel to the tank requireing a large filter but now in the returnless fuel system the fuel only goes through the filter and straight to the injectors no need for the filter. Federal required vapor emissions is the results of these changes. Dont blame GM they are just doing what the law requires.

SOOOOOOOO-WHAT YOU'RE SAYING- I've got 25,000 miles on my truck and don't have to worry about changing my fuel filter until I get to 100?!?!?!?!?!!?! Then-when I do they have to remove the tank?

I know how the fuel system works and understand what you are saying, but instead of having your fuel go through one filter, have it go through two filters. The nominal micron rating of the stock filter is not very small so you can have a second filter with a smaller micron rating than the first(OEM filter)filter which will capture more contaminants in the fuel. You would be quite surprised how much crap the secondary filter captures that would otherwise enter your fuel injection system and it will not impact your vapor emmission requirements one bit. Think about how much crap two oil filters will collect instead of one. I am a firm believer in a secondary filter and it's a cheap insurance policy for your engine. :)

I don't think having an external filter as a second is a good idea, it doesn't do anything for the internal filter. Which I thought was the initial problem here. :)

 

An external filter only is probably better, but then we could change this ourselves and GM/Dodge and that other one :cool: would lose money from the people that go to dealers to have their work done.

The internal filter was mentioned as the initial problem , but he also asked about getting his fuel injection system clogged up as well. As I stated above, the initial filter in the tank does not have a very low micron rating so it allows a lot of contaminants to pass through it. If you put a secondary filter between the initial and the engine with a smaller micron rating then it will capture all the contaminants that pass through the initial filter and prevent them from doing potential damage to your engine. There is nothing you can do about the filter in the tank if it clogs up, but if you use a secondary filter you can prevent contaminants from getting to to the engine. Look at it this way, if you have to replace the filter in the fuel tank and you have a secondary filter,at least you won't have to spend the extra cash and service the injection system because of contaminants in the fuel. A very small investment in a secondary fuel filter could save you major dollars down the road. It's your money, spend it as you see fit. :P

They are actually a plastic composite and the part numbers will vary depending on the application. Check with your local dealer. :cool:

    • I like the idea.  I would pick diesel if I had a choice. I need pictures though.
    • I've installed cheap eBay new aftermarket digitizers before.  They work.  Did a bunch of Cadillac CUE (aka Cadillac's MyLink) for someone years ago.  They all worked fine after the repair.    That number 22740886, that is a component part # for GM.  You can use it to search, but its not something that's obtainable at the dealer level.     So pretty much any of these will work - 2015 Colorado Digitizer for sale | eBay
    • Black bumper and the later years Z-71 style color matched grille.
    • You can install tailpipes that direct the exhaust sideways vs the OEM one that goes straight back. There are several on the market, do you own research. HOWEVER, you need to make sure the Venturi vents are still intact, otherwise it will throw a engine code. There is a sensor somewhere that detects back pressure on the exhaust. And if it doesn't collect the correct metrics, it will throw the truck into limp mode. 
    • "Teardown" is complete. Head surfaces are clean and ready, new intake is prepped and ready. Coolant drained and water pump is removed, radiator is removed, new hoses and pump are ready.   The replacement intake is also from a '95 (with I think 260k, the odometer said). Noticeably less pitting where it covers the rear coolant passages. I'm not sure if that's a tribute to more frequent use, more frequent coolant changes/upkeep, or if the intake was machined at some point. But it appears I found a good one.   My coolant hoses were original, and the lower hose still retained the factory spring inside. It's not really rusty, but it's got deposits all over it. Unsure if I should re-install it (will thoroughly clean it first). Someone said hose technology has gotten better since 1995 (has it?) and I don't need the spring. I think modern EPDM is what made those hoses last from 1995-2026, so it's a question of how much suction can the water pump really pull, and will it collapse the hose without a spring?   I'm stopped and waiting for parts, however.   When I first brought the truck home, the fan was intermittently hitting the radiator shroud. I could see someone had monkeyed with the shroud (put a bunch of cardboard as a spacer between the upper/lower shroud halves. Someone said the motor mounts have likely failed and the engine has sagged. I wasn't sure I believed that. The engine is really solid in its mounts: To remove the old intake I *just* nearly permanently welded to the heads with freshly cured RTV and gasket snot two weeks ago, I literally had to use the arms on my lift and a chain with a bolt attached to the intake to pull it loose. It almost picked the front of the truck off the ground before ....scuuuuuuuuuuup.... I could actually hear the gaskets tearing and it broke loose and the whole truck settled back down. Motor barely moved.   SO, those parts I'm waiting on... The lower radiator mounts/bushings had completely failed. The radiator needs to be insulated from the rad support, and the bushings help the rad stand at the correct height. The plastic "baffle" was also destroyed at some point. Someone had attached the shroud to it incorrectly, overlapping a joint that should have been underlapped, creating another suspect issue potentially causing things to hit the fan. Broken tabs, side is busted off, and it's perma-formed/bent where it was jimmied incorrectly.   The baffle? Unobtainum. Long since discontinued from GM, of course. Aftermarket/capa/chinese? Also unobtanium. In GM's infinite wisdom, it appears there are at least two different variations whether the Blazer is 2 or 4 door, and I can't yet tell if they shared the same part with the S-pickups. Plan B, if I can't find a viable used one, will be to create a bracket to re-assemble the critical joint I need to seal a gap with the shroud. But that will bug me, it won't be...perfect.   The water pump bolts appear to have been installed with...plumber's putty. I guess, sure, if it works...? I've found a few "backyard fixes" like that. Someone's been here before....   If I can't find someone to jam bamboo under my fingernails to fill my free time this week I think I'll install the driver's power window motor and replace the rear door speaker that's inop. I've got a genuine GM "9.5" ohm working replacement. Why GM used a non-standard resistance....nevermind. Of course they did, you can get more sound from a cheap factory amp that way.   And the saga goes on...
