Scratched Clearcoat

Last fall on the deer hunt I inherited the usual sagebrush scratches, nothing deep. I used my fingernail and could not "catch" any of them. I used a "Turtle Wax" scratch remover and after I was finished I not only failed to rid the scratches but put swirl marks in the clearcoat. I have tried "Maguiers" but to no avail. It just turns my stomach to see it clean and have the sun hit the paint. You can still see the original scratches covered by a film of swirl marks. Do I need to have it buffed professionally or maybe have it done with a clay bar? You cannot feel anything to the touch it is just noticable in direct light. Any suggestions?

If you pick up one of those cheap random orbital buffers (6 inch will do) and some decent foam pads and 3M Swirl Mark Remover for Dark Colors 39009 (Pep Boys carries this). Don't apply too much force, let the machine do the work. This should take the scratches and swirls out. Just put your favorite wax afterwards. Does wonders with black paint.

Oh, if you use the buffer to put wax on after, use a different pad.

I'm on Zaino Bro's email list and they just sent out this new product announcement. It's their new swirl and scratch remover. Zaino Scratch and Swirl Remover If it's from Zaino, then it's got to be a great product.

Worked great! Instead of using the 3M, I used Maguires #2 Fine Cut Clearcoat Swirl and Scratch Remover. I live in a small town and access is limited. I purchased a 6" orbital buffer at Wally World for 14 bucks and some extra pads. It took about 4 light applications and removed all of the swirls and scratches. I went around the truck and applied it to all of the little scratches. After the scratch removing was done I used the buffer and applied two coates of Maguires Carnuba Wax to the paint. It looks showroom new. My previous Silverado (99) was black, and I swear that scratches show up easier on this Carbon Metallic. Maybe it is the deep sheen of this color.
