I have a wicked rough idle that I've been coping with for over a year.

In fact, I can't remember how long it's been, but it's been too long. I know I've tried everything to fix it.

New fuel filter, plugs, wires, injectors. Sea Foam. Checked all connections. Even a Westers Tune (I told my wife I needed the "computer reprogrammed" to help fix the bad idle!!).

I've checked the stored codes (although it never lights the MIL light) and found only generic lean condition code faults.

 

I've done the idle relearn procedure a few times and that hasn't fixed it. I read online that there is a "Crankshaft Position Variation Learn Procedure" (see below). Anyone done this? Is this applicable to Chevy's?

 

Are there any other recommendations y'all can share for me to check?

Someone once told me it sounded like a bad intake manifold gasket but how the h&ck do ya check that?

CKP variation is only relearned with a scan tool. It does not relearn “by itself.”

 

1. Make sure no DTCs are set. If DTCs

are set, service them before performing the procedure.

2. The service brake must be firmly applied and the transmission in Park for an automatic or Neutral for a manual.

3. A/C must be “OFF” and the hood closed.

4. At this point, use the scan tool and select CASE Learn:

5. Open the accelerator to the CASE fuel cutoff speed and release it as soon as the PCM cuts off the fuel and the engine begins to decelerate.

6. The scan tool will identify when the procedure is complete.

It's applicable, but a crankshaft variation relearn isn't going to correct any sort of rough running or driveability problem. All that does is give the PCM a point of reference so it can detect misfires. It doesn't CAUSE misfires or rough running.

Let me ask you this... What would be the first couple of things you would check if someone brought in a 2001 Suburban 6.0L K2500 with 110,000 miles that just replaced all those items and still had a bad idle?

Are all of your sensors within range?  O2, map, fuel pressure regulator?  Maybe even a clogged cat?

 

Good questions. I am not sure.

So to check sensor ranges, I'd need to get a scan tool that reads and displays that sort of data? (I know, dumb question.) My code reader is just that, a reader and doesn't display sensor readings.

Correct. I reputable shop either a GM shop or the guy down the street with some $$ invested in tools can hook up and watch all these. I use the Vertronix Mastertech at our shop. It is simply amazing what you can do with one of these things, even rev the engine if needed!!!

That is what my local shop uses as well. It is pretty impressive...

    • Hey everyone, I recently had an issue with my 07 2500HD GMT900. My DRL’s stay on at all times. Right front turn and right mirror turn signal indicator stay on solid at all times. By “at all times” I mean the only way to make them go off is disconnecting the battery. I tore the headlight assemblies out, tried disconnecting the harnesses to eliminate bad wiring at the harness, I unplugged the headlight switch, no change and the mirror turn signal still stayed on. My first thoughts were : Bad bulb and/or socket somewhere, under hood fuse panel bad, bcm bad, tail light or trailer wiring problem, or some random short to power in the harness.  Possibly a bad ground but unlikely. I had a big clue in the fuse panel, it had a burnt smell. I started pulling every fuse that had to do with DRL or right turn/park lamp. Nothing made the right directional turn off but pulling the DRL2 fuse made the DRL’s go out.  After studying wiring diagrams, I found that both problems had that fuse panel in common, the bcm also controls both problems but knowing the fuse panel had a burnt smell I removed and disassembled the fuse panel and found a little corrosion on the printed circuit board.  I ordered a new fuse panel from Amazon for like $260. When it arrived I installed it, and put everything back together, the problem was fixed. I figured the fuse panel needed to be replaced anyway so that was a logical place to start. Hopefully this story helps someone in the future. Regretfully I didn’t scan for codes before I did everything.
    • That stinks. I’m sitting on the side of the road right now with the same issue. Never had an issue before taking it in for the ground strap recall. Now I’m outside of warranty and they’ll probably want $200 just to diagnose what they already “fixed”.

If their vehicles can save 1–2% fuel by using a special fuel economy lubricant, then that OEM can drastically reduce the amount of fines they need to pay.”   I liked this and the following paragraph as well but it’s really only touching the beginning of the benefits OEMs see from spec’ing these oils. After you factor in “out of warranty” service work and new car sales when these engines fail before their time, it’s a good racket for them. Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you!
