Seat belts and steering wheel issues

It seems that when it is cold and i go to pull my seatbelt out itll only come out half way.  I let it retract then pull again.  Still only comes out half way.  Takes 5-6 pulls for it to fully come out.

Anyone elses doing this?  Any tsb's?

Also until my truck warms up in the cab my steering wheel when i turn it makes a wierd noise.  Like 2 rubber pieces are rubbing together.  Anyone have this problem?  A  fix?

Just off the top of my head, the steering wheel sound is probably cold steering fluid.  Is it more of a grrrring sound when you try and turn it?  It goes away after it warms up right?  I'll check mine tomorrow.....its been a long day for me niterz.

i have the same problem with my pass side seat belt. there is a tsb. the part is being replaced. however, after having it replaced once, it still does the same thing. my wife calls the truck "christine." from that movie where the car is possessed and crushes people inside. my wife feels one day the pass seat belt will tighten so much it will crush her. i dont have the problem with the driver side. but, she has to pull it numerous times to get it to come out. and when it is on, if she wants room, it locks!

Not its not the steering fluid.  I have heard that.  THis is more of a rubbing screeching sound.  like rubber on rubber possibly?

It was real loud today.  It doesnt really go away when the truck warms up (at least it didnt this morning)

I've seen the TSB on the seat belts before.  No real problems w/ mine unless I yank them too fast, then they'll lock up.  That steering one's odd.   Have you looked to see if it's rubbing on anything.  If it's not too cold out (which i'm sure it is) go and have someone crank the wheel back and forth and just check it for rubbing.

My steering does it too. Look in the footwell where the steering shaft exits the cab. I bet yours is rubbing on that boot at the bottom. Mine does it every so often. I keep forgetting to put a little grease on it.

the noise is coming from the steering wheel on the top.  kinda in between where the wheel and the emergency flasher button is.  That space in there

So have you had the TSB done for the intermediate steering shaft(00-02-35-003)..I think it is supposed to get lubed, or replaced. My truck goes in on the 7th for the front seat belt recall, which is 00045, and the brake pipe thing which is 00093.

If you haven't had any of those done, they may help your situation. I don't know exactly what the seatbelt recall is for......but you may be able to get them to fix them under that recall anyway.

My steering doesn't have any squeaks, it just sounds like a rattle, or groan coming from it and that is supposedly the TSB part.

yea i had the steering shaft replaced about a yr ago.  This has nothing to do with the noise i am sure of that

Ryan,

I have a 2001 1500HD with the same sound.  I tend to agree with jpendlum,  I think its a rubber boot rubbing the steering shaft somewhere.  I had the intr-med shaft replaced about a month ago and that cleared the problem up for a short while.  I think its because the lubed the offending area.

I will have to wait for the weekend to investigate further as its a little cold right now  (only in south Texas would w think upper 40's in late Dec as "cold").  Supposed to hit 70 again by the weekend.

I had a steering problem.  It was actually what the tsb calls

"Steering Gear Whistle".  Anyway..the first time I took it in for steering gear whistle...they said they couldn't hear it.

The Second time I took it in I demonstrated it for them.  They replaced a rubber bushing (or maybe a plastic one) somewhere in the column.  The service manager said that it was definitely bad and that it was my problem.

A week later I was back in there with the TSB in hand and they replaced my entire rack.  Problem solved.  Sounds to me like you have the bushing problem as opposed to the rack problem.

Hope this helps you!

There is no way i have the rack problem.  Mine is a 4wd and that only applied to 2wd trucks
