Question about catalytic converter

Recommended Posts

Posted

I have a '95 GMC Suburban 2500 4wd with the 7.4L motor and I need to replace my catalytic converter. On my truck the cat is located after the muffler. Is this correct? Or has someone been doing some re-engineering? The Y pipe doesn't seem to have been cut, so I'm leaning towards it being correct - it just goes against everything that I've ever seen before.

I was going to replace the whole exhaust while doing it but I can't find any listings for exhaust systems from the normal sources for my truck. Can anyone provide a vendor that supports this truck?

I've tried the search function but it doesn't seem to work.

Thanks for your help,

Bob

As weird as it sounds, TBI big blocks and all gasoline medium duty (TBI and Sequential Fuel Injected) trucks had the cats AFTER the mufflers. Why? Good question, but you can rest tight knowing that it is what the General ordered…for whatever odd reason. Maybe the big blocks over heat the cats when they are before the mufflers??

I would think Flowmaster, Borla and the usual suppliers would support a BB TBI EFI rig. You may have to actually call them as their websites are often pretty hit and miss on older stuff. Hard to believe 1995 is considered older but in some aftermarket part territories it is.

Thanks for the reply. I was starting to get a little worried. In the past 2 days I've had 2 muffler shops tell me that the cat is in the wrong place. Then they want to know if I want them to "fix" it.
