Castrol Syntec doesn't belong grouped with the others. Syntec is a group III and the others are group IIII. Syntec is a highly refined dino oil and while its a good oil shouldn't be regarded the same as the others.

I'd never pay the premium price for an oil thats not even a true synthetic.

On this subject, What is everyones opinion on changing a 100K 8.1 over to synthetic?

I've had a friend experiment with mobile 1 on a 230K tracker and it worked out fine, but there are some obvious differences between the 2.

Any input would be great.

Shouldn't be a problem, that's about the milage I changed my previous truck (5.7L).

Amsoil for me. I'm still on my first batch of oil though. It doesn't need to be changed until December. That will make for 1 year on the same oil. I changed the filter at 6 months though!

So far, I'm sold!

Are you doing oil analysis,or are you guessing it'll go a year?

Bumblebee-Tuna,

Amsoil is great, but you need to do an oil analysis especially if its your first year. Do that on the switch to any new oil. This is my first time using royal purple, I want to see if it is better, worse or the same as the others I have used to determine what I will probably go with for the duration. This batch of royal purple I am using now is supposed to be a new formula that is 40 percent better than the new mobil 1. We shall see.

Nah, I'm not doing the oil analysis yet. It's probably a good idea, but I went with the 0w30 that says it's good for 35k or 1year, whichever comes first. I've changed the filter at 6mos as per reccomendations, and have been topping off my oil burner every once in a while. I'm deffinately changing it this year, but next year I might just get the analysis done and see if I need to. There are several people out there that have been on the same oil for hundreds of thousand miles. Now I just have to remember to rotate my tires every once in a while. :seeya:

i use German Castol Syntec 0w-30.

I swapped from Mobile 1. I wasn't sure what to think about a ruling on them about something in their oil. I can't remember what it was, but the GC 0w-30 has gotten rave reviews and has quieted my ticking beast.

Wow! you have a bigger sack than I do. I'm all for extended drains, but only with an analysis to back it all up. I would have done a UOA at the 6 month mark, and then again at a year.

Those guys running Amsoil for all those miles are without a doubt using a bypass filter.

I agree, Castrol Syntec is a group III, the oil that is blended in the US, but their German made 0w-30 is a PAO group IV and is a great product. You can get it at Auto Zone, at least here in NC.

Freyguy, you really need to do an oil analysis to make sure your oil is still within specs. Unless your still under 8k miles then no problem. But if you plan on putting the mileage on that oil in a year you need to have it analized. Especially if it is on a new engine. Doing an analysis is the way to talor your oil changes. It will allow you to run as extended drains that are safe. Every engine is different. I ran 18k on mine the first year and the oil was just out of spec. But now since my yearly mileage is around 12k I know it will last no problem since I have had previous analysis. Yes there are a bunch out there running their oil with several thousand miles on it but like stated by 496 cubic inches they are running bypass filters and with that also having an analysis done, or I would hope they are.

How many miles are on the oil now?

Hmm, I'd have to check my log book, but I'm currently around 10k. From all the research I have done prior to switching to Amsoil, everyone that I read about doing oil analysis said that they could run hundreds of thousands of miles before changing. I figured I'd stick to the oil's reccomended 1yr/35k rule. I guess I'm being cheap at the same time and figure why spend the money to send off the oil if the oil claims to be good for 35k. The truck has 82k on it now and I did the flush when I drained it. I could tell with the dino oil when my truck was close to being ready for a change (always at 3k just to be safe), and I've yet to have anything similar with the amsoil. Not saying thats a safe way to judge, but the engine has been running excellent and idling great. I've also had to top off the oil several times because I've always burned some, so the oil should be relatively new anyway.

Now that you guys got me doubting the oil, I just might have to buy the analysis kit. Sheez! :seeya::sigh:
