97-2003 Engine CASE learn procedure:

Turn the key to on position

Turn Tech II on

Select the Diagnostics Menu

Select Car Information (Year, Make, Engine, Etc.) (Make sure they enter 1998 as the year.) (Also you will be asked what type of product line/type. It is a single letter code. Which corresponds to the first letter in your VIN)

Select Special Functions.

Select Variable Crankcase Learn Procedure.

Follow On Screen Directions.

The Crankcase Learn Procedure is going to ask the Technician to do the following:

Put E-brake On.

Make sure car is in neutral or park.

Turn engine on

Rev Car to Rev Limiter (car will hit limiter at 3,000 RPM)

Wait about 5 seconds.

Rev Car to Rev Limiter (The car will this time hits about 5,500 to 6,000 RPM)

Wait about 5 seconds.

Car is done.

Yeah, I've been calling around, either they don't have a techII or scan tool, or have no idea what the heck I'm talking about.

Thanks

Yeah, I had the same problem in Ancorage, AK. Most shops had the techII but had no idea what I was talking about or soon as I mentioned tuned PCM they acted like I had the plague. "Oh we don't mess with aftermarket problems"

The ones that would do it wanted $100-150 because it supposedly takes them time to set up the techII.......BS!

I called Jesse and have sent my old unit back to be retuned and will return him the other PCM.

From everything I've been reading, it does not relearn itself. I've read some people running around w/their SES lights on for a year+.

Good news, I actually found a place in Anaheim, that knew what I was talking about. I'm taking the truck in tomorrow or Friday to have them do it.

Looking at their website, they look pretty hardcore and after talking to the guy, they seem like they know what they are doing. Everyone else I talked to seemed pretty sketchy and said they would "figure it out."

I'll post back after I get it done.

I was to the understanding that the crank would relearn itself after 6 or so run cycles.

Been running about a week now with the Jesse tune.....still have the SES light.

Of course it may have reset itself and the DTC for light just needs to be cleared. ??

I really want order Jesse's series one tune, but this is the only thing holding me back, I don't know where to get this done. I called around a bit as well, and no one knew what i was talking about, except the dealer. And they asked me why I needed it done. I mentioned a tuned ECM and they said they wouldn't do it.

You need to do the relearn if you replace your PCM. If you have your stock one tuned, than you don't need to.

I think the best way to go about it is to look for a tuner shop in your area, most of the "repair" shops don't have a clue. Look for a place that builds motors, they would have to have a scan tool, because when you replace the crankshaft, the same relearn needs to be done.

Hopefully I will get mine done tomorrow..

If they don't understand as in my case, I mad the guy mad because I told him what needed to be done and the code that the computer was throwing(P1336), he went thru process with his scanner and then had to go read up on how to do the crank relearn, cost me 40 bucks, and I've known th eguy for @ 10 years.

other causes to throw a SES light and need to have the Crank angle relearn (case relearn) is replacing the crank shaft sensor or even replacing the timing chain and timing gears.

tell the dealer that your truck was stolen and recovered but there were a few parts missing and one of them was the PCM, you bought a "used" one through the internet and the seller programed it for your vin but said that it would need a case relearn.

there are other shops beside the dealer that can do this procedure. and there are other scan tools that work.

just about any high performance shop can do it. Tranny repair shops, large mom and pop shops that advertise as electrical / electronic diagnostic & repair.

copy jesse's post on the procedure of doing the case relearn

here is a copy

----------------------------------------

That is for someone with a tech 2. if they have a genisys or other Spx varient scanner.

you have to tell the scanner you truck is a 2002 or lower, that way the crank learn tab will show up.

so when you do pick 2002, then you go to special tests, then you go to engine controls, then you go to "crankshaft relearn" then you follow the instructions.

The reason for the relearn is for the missfire detection to be accurate. It is something that has to be done when useing a pcm that was not in your truck previously and had the case learn done on it. Even from the factory, each vehicle has to get this done to the computer/ motor it works with. All it does when you do a case learn is tell the computer where the cam and crank are at in relationship to each other durring the firing event. That way the pcm can Accurately detect a missfire down to an individual cyl.. If you guys have any more questions please let me know, Ill answer them all for you. Thanks Again. Jes

Being as I work in the automotive field and service many body shops, I had a service to do in an automotive school. After I completed my service, I drove my truck around back to the enging shop and the instructor brought out a Snap-on scanner and took less than 5 minutes to do the relearn.

The moral to this story? Find a school and they will probably do it for free.

Otherwise, just tell your dealer that you replaced the Crank Position Sensor, this causes the code as well.

    • .30” of rain all month and it’s been weeks since that. “Mowed” our two properties today for the first time since July 2nd. It only took 30 minutes because all I had to do was level some weeds and saplings in a few problem areas. Everything else is dead.
    • Dealer reported a failed shifter module assembly so the whole shifter is getting replaced. Yet another premature repair… up to $12,000+ in extended warranty payout in only 5 years and 80,000 miles!
    • According to the dealer it’s an internal leak/failure of the compressor.  Again, another failure that shouldn’t happen at only 5 years and 80k miles.  For some reason the compressors must be hard to come by right now, because the truck’s been at the dealer almost a week and they just located a compressor at another dealer several states away today.  We’ll see if this fixes the issue.
    • I'm not sure if this should be a reply on this thread or a new topic, let me know if it's out of place. This my first post. Thanks 85077522 - ACDelco GM Genuine Parts Brake Master Cylinders. Anyone else had to replace this brake master cylinder yet. I didn't do any brake work, it looks like new parts and I've had the truck for about 4k miles. When it started to throw codes I did the calibrations with a bidirectional scanner and got the codes to clear but they came back so i did the routine; base bleed, automated bleed and final base bleed. All that with Bosch ES16-32N fluid (please look it up). That seemed to fix it but 100ish miles later it failed again so I ran the same process but with a pressure bleeder this time and got the same results, fixed for 100ish miles. The original fluid looked bad and I thought I got most of it out. The codes; P25A2, C05B0-00, C2A1B. I can get them to clear but not for long. The C05B0 indicates a leak in the front circuit (which is bone dry) so I'm thinking of doing the bleed process on that front again today and I don't know if that's taboo to just do the front but at this point it seems like it's worth the try anyway. The new master cylinder/module unit is supposed to get here today. But now I'm pretty much convinced this install is over my head. I've called several shops and some mobile guys that I know but this thing is like radio active material scary wise. I did get 2 local shops say they should be able to do it, one says he has the SPS2 programing capability. And with the battery disconnected is there supposed to be pedal resistance, mine is to the floor, then if I pump it I can get some resistance.
    • I wasn’t commenting on your post. Certainly wasn’t arguing. I was making an observation on my long term experience with supposedly proper length of driving for proper heat cycles. Works for me. Although I have seen water or vapor come out of exhaust when vehicles weren’t run very long and shut off. It’s very humid in the morning. Then hot and humid.
