Which Toyo tires? 6 ply or not?

I am planning to get the Open Country A/T's from Kauffman Tire. I have 285 BFG's now but they scrub a little when I make sharp turns even with the T-bars cranked. I guess it's due to teh offset of my American racing wheels. I paln to go back to 265's and they have 2 listed on their site. An L/T OWL 06 and a P-MET.

I called to ask and the guy said the only diffference was the 06 was a six ply tire. He said I should get the P-Met and they are $20 cheaper a tire.

Looking at several sites the P-mets have less tread depth and the max pressure is 35psi compared to 50 on the others. Althought the load compacity is more on the P-mets.

Can anyone really explain the differences here?

Less tread depth = less tire life. The trucks come with P-rated tires, and even if the P-Rated are rated at higher wieghts, I would trust the L/T more with a load. The P-rated will give the truck a nicer ride as the sidwalls are less stiff.

As for your rubbing with the 285's, did you zip tie your inner fender liners? It stopped the rubbing on my old truck and my Dad's GMC.

LT tires are derated by 15% because trucks usually go places cars don't go, so the 15% is an extra margin of safety to compensate for the rocks and roots you'll be driving over.

So if you use a P-rated tire on a 4wd truck, you should take 15% off its load capacity and make sure it still covers any anticipated loads.

I personally would stay with the 285's. The Toyo 265's are 2-piece molded; the 285's are segment molded. Ask Kaufman to show you a sample of all 3. Watch for the mold lines.

Segment molding is better (more accureate, more round).

That must explain the price difference

265 P-MET - $119.00

265 LT - $139.00

285 LT - $164.00

The price difference is also related to the size. A 285 will be more than a 265 because you're buying more rubber.

The P rated 265s are less because they are a lighter-duty tire. I'd get the 6ply 265s and call it a day.

I think the some of the price difference can also be attributed to numbers. I'm willing ot bet they make a lot more 265s than 285s. The rubber factor (plies) probably makes up for the difference between the P265s and the LT265s.

Just a theory...

6 plies is what? D-Rated? If I'm right, that's a pretty stiff tire so you'll feel it on the road. Nonetheless, I would go with an LT on a truck (C-rated on a half-ton, D or E on a 3/4 or 1 ton) before going back to P-rated tires. Just more rugged.

The Toyo PDF link explains the differences between P-metric and LT-metric tires and why the load carrying capacity of the P-metrics is reduced when used on light trucks. Check the 265 example starting on the bottom of p.4. Be sure the tires you buy meet or exceed the OE spec on your door placard.
