I need to vent on fuel prices

What really pisses me off is that years ago when a hurricane was in the gulf we never heard of fuel prices going up, but now they can use that excuse to raise prices and this is what really gets to me,when oil prices go up per barrel we see the price at the pump almost the next day but when it drops we dont see it for about 2 to 3 weeks.Like I said before we get hit twice for the price of fuel,once at the pump and 2nd, the things we buy at the store are going up because of rising shipping costs.Something needs to be done and done NOW. Oh and another thing the higher up people that can make a differance in fuel prices dont give a $hit about us after all they make boo koo bucks and are not worryed about the price of fuel,3-4 dollars a gallon is like 1-2 cents to us plus they dont pay for fuel they charge it back to the country in there expence account,I gotta go now because iam getting more pissed by writing this reply.I say we keep all our oil supply and produce and stop shipping it out of the country and screw the arabs,screw it iam gone.

We need to start protesting and let everyone know we arent going to take this crap. I only hear of people complaining or trying to tell us that we need to inflate our tires or car pool. I say we start protesting maybe then someone will hear us. :driving:

Just watching the news here the pricing is out of control. They showed one place at $3.49 (87 octane) and a place down the street for $2.79.

 

I dont understand how the price of a barrel of oil goes down but prices go up??? Well I do understand it (supply/demand) but something doesnt make sense

In past years the nations refineries haven't been at max capacitiy to meet demand as they were before this hit. We were running 90% to 100% to meet 105% of demand. Now we lost 25% of our refineries so we are at 70% to 75% of that total demand. Add on that most of the oil imported from Venezuela came into Mobile, and most of the rigs in the Gulf are still not operational, the suplly is hurting really bad. I am betting the nation average will be $3.50 to $4.00 by the time refineries get back up and going. After I doubt the average will drop below $3.00, call me cynical, but it is an opportunity to raise prices. Top it all off, get ready to see service stations out of gas during this.

EVERYONES BEST BET IS TO GET A 50 - 100 GAL DRUM AND FILL IT UP AND WHEN YOU PAY FOR IT ASK FOR A TAX WRITE OFF, FOR MISSOURI ITS .17 PER GAL. THE REASON FOR THIS IS SOME OF THE TAXES GO TO PAY FOR OUR ROADS AND IF YOU ARE FILLING UP A DRUM THEN THEY CANT PROVE THAT IT IS FOR YOU VEHICLE. Live in Baton Rouge, as a result of the Hurrican there are 2 major refineries that arn't running at all and may be be month before they can get back to 95% capacity. What does this have to do with gas...not a d**n thing, but rest assured it will be the catalist for raising prices. Also, there are a number of figs that were not damamged in the gulf.

I allready have secured 4 - 100gallon barrels with an electric pump. They're going in the shed and will be my supply for the vehicles. 100 gallons should last me quite some time. I can pay $2.51 a gal for it at sams club as of tonight, get a few bottles of fuel stabilizer and be good when gas is $4/gal.

 

I'm getting a few more barrels tomorrow for myself and my sister

Higher prices hurt everybody, not just the people who are barely making ends meet. But there are only 2 choices for allocating the reduced supply to a fuel hungry nation:

 

1. Raise prices to the point where people conserve.

2. Ration gas so that people conserve.

 

Either way you won't have the gas you had last year.

 

We tried "rationing" in 1973 by imposing socialist price controls. For those of you where weren't around then, it was widely regarded as a failed government policy that made the shortage worse. The rationing took the form of miles-long gas lines and a maximum purchase of a specific number of gallons. Huge amounts of gas were wasted idling in gas lines. There was great misery anyway, and plus everybody was wasting hours of each week waiting for gas.

 

Painful though it may be, the price rising the way it has is far preferable in my opinion to any other method of causing people to conserve.

Rationing would be impossible. My company has a few hundred fleet vehicles--most are 4x4 F150's. I know for one my truck goes through a tank of gas every day. If they rationed out gas, it would never work out. I drive the truck 85 miles a day to/from work round trip, and on the job put WELL over 100+ miles a day on it.

 

I'd like to see that pass because if it causes me to loose my job that's someone's ass.

Just let the market do its thing.

 

When the government gets involves its what I like to call "the law of perverse reactions." Whatever they try to do in the economy, the opposite happens and just screws everything up.

 

Also the conspiracy theorists convincing everyone that we are doomed and need to horde all the gas we can isn't quite helping at the moment. We are in a TEMPORARY shortage caused by the refineries going offline, shortage = higher prices. It will be somewhat better when they come back on.

I'm with MCourson, just keep a cool head. It's temporary. Although, I think that if the long-haul independent truckers just parked their trucks for a day or two, the price of Diesel would miraculously fall.

I've said it on other forums and people didn't like to hear it: Gas is one thing I don't mind paying a premium for. Now, I'm not an idiot, I realize if gas prices keep going up, so does the cost of other things. Obviously vehicles that transport goods to us use fuel, etc. I'm not saying it should be $6.00/gallon anytime soon. What I'm saying is, crude oil is a resource that we will run out of one day... have you ever looked out over a sea of idling vehicles in a traffic jam and just thought about all that fuel, all the people in cars in every city. And we just pump that oil, more more more!

 

If gas prices get too high, it could do serious damage to the economy. But it shouldn't be dirt cheap either, as we don't have an endless supply of it. If these price increases force some people to carpool, take public transportation, walk/ride a bike, trade in an SUV that they really didn't need in the first place, etc then it's a GOOD thing.

 

I'm a car nut but I believe some common sense should be exercised when it comes to 1) buying the right vehicle for your needs and 2) trying to conserve fuel. For example, the wife and I went on a trip to Door County, Wisconsin from Chicago this past weekend. My wifes first thought was to take my truck (a V6 S-10 pickup) because we are bringing the dog, his crate, all of our bags etc. My truck only gets about 23 MPGs on the highway. I suggested that although I love and prefer driving my truck, lets take her (shudder) Neon instead. It's smaller but the cage collapses, the dog can stretch out on the backseat and we should be fine.

 

Bottom line? I missed driving my truck, but the Neon took us up there and back just fine, and got 35 MPGs doing it! It has such a tiny gas tank too, I had to laugh -- I was at the gas pump in Fish Creek, Wisconsin and this 06 Cadillac DTS took 23 gallons of gas which equalled $77 dollars!!!! My car cost only $15.50 to top off, and I think it only has a 13 gallon tank to begin with.

    • Which has made me wonder with the various engine failures of a few brands in the last few years, is it sub par materials such as lifters etc causing failures, or bearing clearances on the crank etc or perhaps bad designing of an engine physically or causing too much load on the components due to the hp/torque they can push out of them. Or is the oil viscosity and additive package of current oils or a lack of oil flow by an oil pump not able to supply sufficient oil at idle or under high load at low rpm. Or is it every item I listed that combined together has pushed the limits so far to the left that there is hardly a margin of safety left and add in some fuel dilution and too long of an OCI and premature engine failure is the result ?. 
    • He is not saying that an SAE *W20 will have more viscosity than a *W40 due to MORE VII polymers. He is saying that although multiple *W40 may post in the PDS the same or similar 100 C and 150 C viscosities that the blenders choice of modifier TYPE and AMOUNT to get his chosen base to grade will not give identical real world viscosities in shear and at temperature. All will pass the SII test but not all will pass the 100 C HTHS (unpublished value) testing the blender does and relies on to get the required by law "percentage improvement' referenced to his last great work.    Tis the problem with the lie.     • I have a `25, 1500 that auto sets on incline. Never knew that at first. I have the electronic shifter. Just think if it didn`t do that? Unlike a mechanical shift that you can muscle out of park, how would you get this thing out? That would be a problem.   What I found out later is, I don`t have to push the button to release. Just put it in gear.   Setting parameters? Don`t know if it`s possible.

I usually set the parking brake (habit) when on flat ground for typical driving.    When backed down on the launch ramp to launch the boat and I place gear selector into Park, the parking brake activates automatically. My second nature is to set parking brake manually and noticed I was turing the parking brake off.  The parking brake appears to be setting itself automatically.   I looked all over my owner's manual and only found references to being on an incline and manually setting parking brake, or at times parking brake will be auto engaged, but nothing specific to my situation.    When is the parking brake automatically engaged?  Under what specific circumstances?  Can the auto set parameters be changed?     I like the auto set feature.  It would be nice if always engaged when shifted into Park and released when shifted out of Park (like my wifes 2025 RAV4).   Thanks!

That is where the data shows higher instances of more wear. Molybdenum was the key; the higher the amount, the less the wear. Speed postulates that higher viscosity oils have more thickeners to artificially inflate their viscosity numbers. These thickeners lose viscosity under shear, and the result is that not all oils of the same viscosity have the same shear stability.   Having enough viscosity is the most important characteristic, but according to Speed, once that required viscosity level is reached, additive chemistry matters more than additional viscosity. Speed also states, oil pressure problems on the racetrack aren’t a viscosity problem; it’s an oiling system problem. Running a thicker oil is just a band-aid for an underlying oiling system problem.
