I would be VERY leery of buying the first line of 42V systems - while they have many benefits, they will also ruthlessly reveal quality problems with harnesses and wiring which are unnoticed today.

The reason is that a 12V short will maybe give a small spark upon contact, but a 42V short has the potential to "weld" the wire at the short location.  Obviously, both are problems if they are constant, but an intermittent short would turn from an annoyance (depending on how noticable the problem was) to a fuse-blower or even a fire.

And how many people have never encountered an intermittent electrical fault with any of their cars?

Anyways, IMHO, I would definitely give any automaker a good three or so model years to ensure that they can get the higher build quality required from their suppliers.

I've been hearing about this for years now.  Imagine the possibilities!  Electric assist power brakes, electric steering, blah, blah, blah...we'll just see about that.  Last I heard, GM is really concentrating more on the "displacement on demand" thing for the truck engines.  I'd be leary about buying either.  Remember the V-4-6-8 Cadillacs?  Ugh.  The first 42v systems will have gremlins like no other system before it.  Let some other poor sap be the guinea pig, like the government has been for the FFV vehicles that the public just can't seem to get into buying.

auto makers have had their heads up their ass for years now on that subject..

Im tired of having to add extra batteries and larger alternator to power my subs, hid foglights, neon underlights, neon inside, dvd player, lcd monitor
