GMC Polished Grille Emblem-Install Help

Just purchased a GMC grille emblem for my 02 Denali from Trenz. The quality is superior but need to know if any of you have installed one. The OE plastic GMC emblem can easily be removed but can the black base be removed? If so, will the new eblem cover the holes? Or do you install the emblem on the base plate. I prefer installing direclty on the grille.

If anyone can help it would be Jon (Chevy4x4) because he is the one who made all the "bowtie" emblems....
