Tranny will be toast

Dirtrace99

Question

Dear GM Expert,

My father is having a problem with his automatic transmission in his 1998 GMC Sierra 4X4. I've been a Jeep guy for years  and have little to no experience with GMs. Dad bought the truck used but I was with him when he checked it out and I test drove it with him and everything seemed to be solid. He has had it less than a year and the transmission started making all kinds of noises. He has done nothing but drive it 3 miles a day to work and back ever sense he bought it. First i checked out the transfer case to see if that was the problem. Fluid was good and everything seemed ok. So I went on to the transmission. When I drained the fluid from the tranny to change it there were a lot of little clutch chunks in it :chevrolet: . So I threw a new filter in it and some new fluid and Lucas and started doing some research. I was told that the tranny is a 4L60E. So I called the guy who rebuilds our transmissions and he told me it would be about $1300.00 to rebuild it. I have a friend with some old GM Turbo 400s and a 700R4 that is in good shape. Will either of these bolt up and work ok, am I doomed to hocking out the cash to get the 4L60E rebuild, or is everything not as bad as I'm making it out to be. Any info is appreciated.

Thanks

Dear GM Expert

As mentioned in the pinned topics of this forum, we don't put in components that are not the ones designed for that application. So, when it comes to swapping in a different tranny, I'm no expert. Heck, I'm not expert in a lot of things! :chevrolet:

When I drained the fluid from the tranny to change it there were a lot of little clutch chunks in it :chevy: .

Howdy.

$1300.00 seems very high to me. I would do some research. Grab a phone book and call a couple different tranny shops. I'd be willing to bet you can rebuild a 4L60-E for A LOT less than 1300.00. There is a gentlemen in the for sale section of this forum that was actually selling one (with a shift kit I might add) for like 300 bucks. I'd try to find him and see if he still has it. He was in the Dallas, TX area.

I would definatly not try to swap a Turbo 400 or a 700R4 in its place. I would emagine the motor would proably accept it, these are inferior trannys compared to a 4L60. Not to mention the 4L60-E is Electronically controlled, so there would probably be some issues there.

Hope this helps.

Thats the link for the tranny for sale. He never posted again to say he's sold it, so maybe your in luck. Even if your nowhere near you could probably get shipped WAY cheaper than $1300.00. I was gonna pick it up myself, but I have nowhere to store it and the tranny in my 94' (192k miles) is still strong as ever.
