Engine Problems

Hey everyone, I am new to this, but am looking for help with fixing some problems with my 1979 Chevy Scottsdale. It's a 4x4 with a 350. The manifold and carb are edelbrock. I have only had this truck a little while, and havn't figured out what's wrong. When I start the truck, I get a large white cloud out the exhaust. The truck has hedman headers and dual straight pipes with Glass packs. If I leave the truck idling and give it gas while it's parked, I'll get a patch of sticky black residue on the ground by the tail pipes and when I shut it off it will "diesel". It continues to try to run unless I hold the brake when I shut it off with it in gear and let the clutch out just after I turn off the key. Any help would be appreciated.

White smoke usually indicates coolant in the cylinder. Check coolant for oil and check oil for coolent. Head gasket leak, cracked head can cause this.

Black soot usually indicates running rich but on the ground after idling is probably not a problem if it is black smoke while driving then you are running rich.

2 common causes of Dieseling are too fast an idle, too much spark advance.
