maverickseb Posted October 28, 2005 Posted October 28, 2005 I have a 2003 2500HD and I installed Roof marker lights on it this weekend. When I tested which wire to tap into for power, it was a no brainer. When i took the headlight swicth out and tested to see which wire had power when the lights went from off to parking lights, there was only one that went from zero to full power. Therefore that is the wire I tapped into. Come to find out a few days later, when I dimmed my interior lights my newly installed cab lights also dimmed. So I thought, easy fix, WRONG. I check all my wires again thinking I just didn't check all the wires thouroghly. But the dimmer wire is the only wire out of 14 or 16 wires that power/no power when I turn my parking lights on. The wire I tapped into was brown. Does anyone know what wire is the correct wire to tap into. I don't like that my cab lights dim with my interior lights. Kinda petty but I just want it installed correctly. If I turn my headlights off I want my cab lights to shut of too, but the way it is installed now, I have to shut my lights off and dim my dimmer swicth all the way down. Thanks for any help.
Shaners Posted October 28, 2005 Posted October 28, 2005 My buddy had a heck of a time hooking up his lighted running boards. I think he ended up wihere it wasn't the hot wire that was switched on the interior lights, but rather it was the ground. I know it sounds strange, but I think these trucks are wired "new school", and not the conventional way we think.
Silverado4x4 Posted October 28, 2005 Posted October 28, 2005 Just run the power wire out through the firewall and tap into the left front parking light wire (not the turn signal) use a volt meter to find the right wire, thats what I did.

I just figured I was missing something. I guess that will be a lot easier than trying to find a needle in a hay stack. Thanks for the feedback.
redrizza Posted October 29, 2005 Posted October 29, 2005 I bought a truck used that after about a week I figured out the cab lights were wired the same as yours. It ended up burning the resistor out of the interior dimmer switch and I had to go buy a whole new headlight, int/dim switch. All I did was run a wire through teh firewall up to the parking light on the drivers side and tapped into the parking lights circuit. Works great now.
Frozen001 Posted October 31, 2005 Posted October 31, 2005 I believe the factory location for the roof light is in the passenger side wiring harness. Remove the side dash door/panel on the passenger side (looks like the driver side one here the fuses are. One of those pin locations should provide power to the roof marker lights. Of course since you truck does not have the lights from the factory there will be no plug with wires coming out of this location.

It's so easy, you'll kick yourself if you don't do it this way.
