Road Tar

They were doing some asphalt grinding the other day on the way to work, in the afternoon it rained. I had drive over that area on the way home. I noticed asphalt pieces were stuck to the side of my truck, so I figured it would come off when I washed it. Well, I washed and the asphat crap stuck to the paint, side moulding, and in my factory painted white fender wells. I got most of the stuff off by just going over it with at wash mitt and car wash, but I stlll have some residue stuck to the paint.

 

What is the best way to remove the tar residue without damaging the paint?

 

Kerosene?

 

Gasoline?

 

WD-40?

 

Any help would be appreciated

I just bought some Tar & Bug Cleaner from Pep Boys last time that happened. I let it soak in, a little elbow grease, and voila.

That's what I used. About 5 months ago, they were repaving a section of asphalt by my house and didn't have it marked. Of course, I didn't notice it either.

 

I had tar from front to back, top to bottom all over my white truck, some places it was over 1/4 inch thick. It took me more than 4 hours to get 90% of it off with 4 cans of Bug-N-Tar remover and about 9000 lbs of elbow grease. I still don't have it all off.

 

Man, was I ticked. I don't even like to wash my truck, much less spend a half a day scrubbing on it.

Goo Gone works very good for the tack which is on your trucks. Also, pure pinesol will work with elbow grease.

For concrete Sulfuric acid will get that off without damaging the paint. It will take time however.

haha, funny that this just comes up. I JUST clayed my truck. Not only will it remove any bug guts and tar, but it will leave your truck feeling VERY smooth. =)

I use WD-40 then wash with soap and water, re-wax.

Same here. Nice and cheap, wont hurt your paint, and gets the tar right off. Same with baked on eggs...unfortunately learned that through experience.

One of my buddies suggested that you might use a claybar kit then wax it with a buffer. Hope this helps.

Denatured alcohol works WONDERS for removing ANYTHING! It will remove wax, but it will not hurt paint. The last time I had to use it for anything major was when the Rhinoliner dealer got alot of overspray on the truck and just a dab of the denatured alcohol on a cloth melted away even the thick concentrated overspray like a charm. It's cheap, too, I paid about $5 for a half gallon at Ace Hardware.

Tarminator works very well, as does WD40, just wash or damp wipe after using these products. Most of these will remove carnauba wax, if you're using a synthetic "wax" you will be fine.

Another vote here for WD-40. Works like a charm! Saves a trip, too, 'cuz everybody's got WD-40 around the house. Don'tcha?

I know it sounds crazy but creamy peanut butter works really good. Whatever you do dont use the crunchy stuff This is something almost everyone has lying around the house too.
